I hope this is the right place to post this..

I have been a "photographer" for the past few years and have recently been wanting to get into the portrait side of the art and possibly down the road, create a business out of it. I've taken several head shots for friends and such and have found I really enjoy working with people. My main question is: how do I break into the world of portrait photography? Where do I start? My current arsenal of gear includes a 5D Mk II, EF 40mm f/2.8, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, and a good sturdy tripod. Any input is greatly appreciated.

EOS 5D Mark II - EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM - EF 50mm f/1.4 USM - EF 40mm f/2.8 STM - Speedlite 600EX-RT - Alien Bees B800 x2

Great question....understand your real costs, your marketing, your branding. There are hundreds, no thousands of folks with digital cameras that think they are pros....take some business classes, learn about your niche...I'd seriously consider taking a PPA Business Breakthrough seminar....best $1,300 our studio ever spent.

It's really tough. REALLY tough. In order of importance (generally speaking) here are the things that I think really matter to the budding portrait photographer:

1. Local market conditions
2. Name/brand recognition
3. Your ability to network
4. Talent
5. Gear

I've been far to interested in gear recently, I've let my attention to the action of taking pics fall by the way side. I went to take pictures of my girlfriend last night, and set up my flash and all that stuff, and the pictures were just totally guff, for want of a better expression.

I envy your gear, and would love it all. Nothing better than getting out and just being snap happy and your business will grow with your confidence :)
