I'm looking for a simple solution to combining my 600EX-RT's with my studio lights indoors. I know the peanut slave is labeled as not compatible with the 580EX on B&H's website but, I don't know what the issue is or if it applies to the 600 as well. I like the idea of just plugging a slave into the PC jack and still being able to use the nice Crane coldshoes that I have for my lightstands. I guess the other option is a hotshoe type slave but, the Wein has terrible reviews for horrible quality control.

I guess there is also the option of firing the Speedotron packs with an optical slave and controlling the 600's with the ST-E3. Just trying to be simple, dependable and economical.

BTW, right now I fire the Speedo packs with Skyports.

Flash Zebra has some Canon compatible optical triggers on their site.

That's helpful. I wonder if 580EXII compatability means it will work with a 600EX-RT? Specifically, this one which states it won't work with other EX flashes:

The green one will work with all EX flashes up to the 580EX II. Not sure about the 600EX-RT, though, since I haven't heard of it being tested with that flash yet and I don't have a 600EX-RT to test it myself. Lon (FlashZebra) should be able to tell you, though.

Shot an email off to Lon at Flash Zebra to ask about options for the 600EX-RT. He replied within five minutes.

Bob,

If you want an optical slave that just pushes onto the PC port on the
600EX-RT use this:

http://www.flashzebra.com/products/0118/index.shtml (external link)

If yo would like an attached short cord so you can position the optical
slave (also has the more reliable screwlock PC connector):

http://www.flashzebra.com/products/0272/index.shtml (external link)

These will work nicely in studio like conditions, specifically inside in
small to medium sized room not painted extremely dark colors. They work
poorly outside and in huge rooms (just like your optical slaves on your
studio lights).

Enjoy! Lon

Hopefully others will find this useful. I think I'll order one of each and see which will fit my need better before buying a few more.

Just a quick follow up. I got the slaves from Flash Zebra the other day (one of each) and they both work well. The one with the screw-lock extension cable is much more versatile and I will be ordering a few more of them.

I've got a question on the same topic but I need a radio slave. Does anybody know of a radio slave that would work on the same set up? I shoot weddings and in my receptions I use 600 ex-rt's but i'd like to add a couple b1600's in the corners of the room to add some fill light. any thoughts on how to trigger them using my 600's?

If you want to use RF triggering, connect the RF transmitter to the PC port of the camera assuming you have the 600EX-RT mounted in the hot shoe. You can then trigger the B1600s with the RF receivers (one for each B1600 unit). Just about any RF triggering set should work for this kind of setup.

I posted this in another thread a while back. This is just a mock up and could be done a little more streamlined. Using a Elinchrom Skyport allows me adjustment from the camera.
