Am going out this evening to shoot the "Nottingham Lights" which is basically various lighting statues etc around the city. I am in need of advice on settings really.

Camera is an EOS550d

Not sure which lens to use. Choice of 10-22mm or 24-105mm or 50mm f1.4.

Am going to use a Gorilla pod strapped to whatever I find.

Having just a quick look tends to suggest ISO 100, f11-16 & 30 second upwards shutter speed.

Any suggestions will be greatly received.

Many thanks in advance, Kevin

Kind regards, Kevin

Kevin,
Choose the lens based on the composition you want to create. Shooting lights is largely a matter of experimentation. The exposures can vary depending on obvious factors like brightness of the lights, and less obvious ones like whether you want to place an emphasis on the light itself or its impact on the surroundings. I would make sure to have a play with the 50 1.4 and convert some of the lights in the distance to "bokeh balls".

Many thanks. I am looking to just take the one lens out as a "Walk about". There are various different locations & subjects to be photographed. Tending to lean towards the 10-22 as some of the subjects will be in tight streets & buildings etc. If the 50mm was wider then that would have been the lens of choice. Also, the thing is, I love the 24-105mm

Kind regards, Kevin

If you have to take just one lens, well, I guess the 10-22 since it's a fine lens that you can go wide with. I myself would want to take the 24-105 as well, in case you want to get a nice close shot at a reasonable distance/perspective, but that's me.

Well, I guess you went out last night -- how did it go?

I'm "late to the party", but I'll toss out some random thoughts, they may be handy for your next outing!

As to your settings, you have a good "starting point". Your time of exposure can vary with your subjects and the available light. For cityscapes with "good" lights, you may be fine with the 30-second exposure. Feel free to shoot and chimp though.

If you can, a "remote" shutter release (cable or wireless) is great for this type of thing. If you don't have one, then learn to use your in-camera tools -- the self-timer and mirror lock-up are very useful with or without a remote release. The key is to minimize your "hands-on" activity. And, this can be critical if you are shooting in the Bulb mode -- you can stand there with the remote release in hand rather than be hunched over holding the shutter button down (with whatever movement that may involve)!

Just my thoughts after-the-fact!
