Nikon Tumbles Most Since 1985 After Forecast Cut: Tokyo Mover

"Nikon Corp., Japan’s third-biggest camera-maker, plunged the most since 1985 in Tokyo trading after cutting its profit forecast because of slowing demand in Europe and falling prices.
The company dropped 19 percent to 2,139 yen at the close. That was the biggest decline among the 225 members of the Nikkei 225 Stock Average...."

And based on all of the weeping and gnashing of teeth on this forum, I thought Nikon was killing Canon with their recent camera models.

Interesting quote from the article:

Canon last month forecast profit will rise 14 percent in 2013, helped by a weaker yen and rising sales of its more expensive models.

Canon will be right behind them. Prices here are dropping very fast. Both companies obviously missed the fact the world economy is hurting.

Too bad for Nikon that posters on a Canon forum don't decide the company's health.

I guess all those cheap D800s and D600s were GREAT for consumers.
For Nikon? Not so much...

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Same story with Canon, though, and 5D3 and 6D (and everything else).

I hope prices keep dropping. But a weak Yen will compensate

that's because most people are still thinking in a megapixel race. the megapixel count is no longer the factor that will make people upgrade.

What is?

I think we have got to a point where high ISO is no longer a big deal. When we were stuck at 1600, going to 3200 and then 6400 was great. But now even the cheapest APS-C cams (and some m4/3) can do pretty good 6400 and usable 12800, so why upgrade?

We have plenty of detail and resolution, high enough ISO. Great AF (in most) cameras, good feature sets.

So what's left? About the only thing a lot of Canon users are complaing about is DR.

I think this is what a mature market looks like. And that means plateaued sales and growth.
