Hi All

I have seen that there are various manufacturers of the Acra Swiss type clamps and plates. But the one question stands out to me is slippage & security???

As far as I can tell only the AcraTech have a pin that stops the plate and hence the body/lens combo slipping out if the clamp is not 100% tight and the you inadvertantly let go whilst it is in a tilted orientation.

But am I missing something that is not obvious to me  in that is there an inherent builtin element of all the makers that such 'slipping out' cannot happen???

So if you use this system with Manfrotto 498RC2 ballhead (that is what I have) and am looking to get an adaptor to remove my RC2 plate and fit a Arca Swiss type QR clamp & plate. Or indeed what do you use and possible to give me any feedback???

TIA :D

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Markins clamps also have the same spring-loaded safety stop detent pin that the Acratech clamps have.

Some camera plates (not all) have sockets that take small safety stop screws. These screws catch in the relief cut-out on the top surface of most clamps.

Some camera plates are not equipped with a tapped socket thread and are dangerous as you stated as they can easily slide out.

Many manufacturers have some sort of security pin in either the plate or the clamp. With lever release clamp, thats okey.
But when using screw lock clamp, its not quick anymore, because you have to top load the clamp. The fastest is so slide the plate in and out, but that doesn't possible when the safety pin is in the way. I have removed all safety pins from my clamps and plates. If I dont lock the clamp, off course the camera will slip out, but why should I not lock the clamp?

We're all different. I find top loading faster than sideways. I have a new RRS lever clamp, my first experience with a lever as I've always used screw knob clamps before. I'm top loading the RRS clamp too.

I also don't fit the little security screws because it stops you sliding the QR plate in sideways.

I have an Arca Swiss Z1 with the 'quickset' screw clamp, because I trust myself to do it up, and then check it's tight - I personally don't trust the QR lever type if using different make plates (I use Arca Swiss and Sunwayfoto).

When I got the RRS so-called "self-adjusting" lever clamp a couple weeks ago I tested the following brand plates in it: Benro, Clearsight, ProMediaGear, SunwayFoto, RRS & Wimberley. They all provided a very secure connection. So the clamp seems to be OK but it's only a few days old. Let's see if it works the same a year from now...
