Im going to build my own rig out of parts but im wondering what diameter to get the rails. Does anyone have any recommendations?

There is a guy in the UK who swears by 1/2" rails. To me its a no brainer 15mm dia 60mm c/c, that way you can swap and change with the thousands of parts already available. John Sims
