Hello fellow POTN members, I own a 48" Octabox from Fotodiox(the non folding kind) which I love using. It has been a GREAT and CHEAP modifier to work with but I now realize that I want to control the spread more. I was hoping someone could chime in and point me to a grid that will last as long as the octabox. Something with some good build quality which wont rip on me after a few shoots. My search has not came up with any decent results.

Here is the octabox that I own

Thanks in advance.

I also have a octa bank that needs a grid. I doubt a vendor sells them separately.

well, the cheapest i could find was $225, $170 for the new octobox and $55 for the grid that fits it, since you only paid $50 for your octobox i figured it was pointless to tell you it would cost 5 times the amount for a grid :lol:

It seems to me that the first problem you'd have is in defining the 48" dimension. Some makers list the maximum diagonal, others measure flat-to-flat. Hence #1 job is to determine which method Fotodiox use (that's the easy bit cos you already have the softbox). After that, it's a matter of chasing down exactly how each maker defines their egg-crate.
A possible starting point would be Jinbei Grid for K-120 Octagonal Umbrella Soft Box Diameter 120cm with Velcro (external link)
but remember it's Chinese Spring Festival and most folks are away till about 16th February so don't expect quick replies!

Check the width of the Velcro on your Fotodiox, not all makes have the width to hold both diffuser AND grid. It's always possible to sew more Velcro on your Octa, of course so this is more an 'Anti-disappointment suggestion' than an essential. A sewing machine is a power tool, so no problem there cos men are allowed to use power tools!

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

That paul buff grid doesn't look to bad for less than $60. Thats about what I was hoping to spend. Buying another modifier just to use a grid on is out of the budget.

The Fotodiox Octa has more than enough space to attach a grid on its velcro portions. For the price you can't beat it, if you dont mind having to put it together and taking it down for transport. I would highly recommend it for a good build quality and cheap modifier.

The measurements are as follows;
Flat to Flat 42.5"
Diagonal 46.5

I will continue to look but possibly will consider the paul buff grid only because I have dealt with their customer service and they are top notch. That is only in terms of me having to return it. I stay away from ordering any gear from China because it takes 2+ weeks for it to get to me usually and would be a pain if I had to send it back.

Thanks for the help everyone. I will update this post with pictures once I make my decision. God Bless

Fotodiox has thier own 48" grid for this:

I own the 48" ex pro octa, but I didn't order the grid because I heard it was fragile. Have you used the fotodiox grid yourself or are you just weary like myself? Anyhow I am interesting in seeing if the PCB grid works on it or not, so I wanted to subscribe to this thread.

I have read a few post referring to the grid being fragile which made me weary on ordering it. Not to mention its $25 more than the buff grid and the modifier itself. Im not ruff on my gear by any means but I do have a PA work with me every now and again that could possibly tear a grid by accident if its built poorly.
