Never owned the 5Dc, but played with a used one before I bought my 5dii. Low light is definitely better on the 5dii. I found ISO 3200 on the 5dii to be about the same as 1600 on the 5dc. The 5dii also has live view, a better rear screen, sensor cleaning and MFA. IQ differences at lower ISOs are minimal and some people prefer the 5Dc's "look". They are both great cameras so long as high perf AF isn't important to you.

If I owned the 5dc and wanted more modern "accoutrements", then I'd go for the 6d, or if I had the money, the 5diii.

If you do mostly portraits, then keeping the 5dc and getting an 85L might make more sense.

+1. OP, I'm about to make the jump to FF too and had long been eyeing up a 5DII, the 6D wasn't even on my radar, but after reading a bunch of reviews it ought to be on everyone's radar. The improvements are fairly drastic in certain areas, to me it's a huge upgrade to the 5DII and because of that I'll be getting one really soon :)

Have had all three. Now shooting with 5dc and 5dmk3. Never used LV but MA can be nice to have. Unless I was shooting mostly ISO3200 or higher I would take 5dc. Looks wise they look same to me and all tend to be on red side depending on the shooting conditions.

The success of newer 5Ds are only base on solid foundation of 5Dc.

how long do the LP-E6s last? I'm getting 700-900 shots with the BP-511s, sometimes I think they last too long because I forget to charge them :D

Maverick75 - I'm getting on average 1500 for each charge. I don't live view much but I do chimp sometimes after shots to check sharpness and histogram.

My LP-E6's are all 3-bars for battery life still as 2 were from my 5D2 and the third came with my 5D3.

The BP-511's from Sterlingtek were awesome compared to my Canon ones in my 5D and 50D before.

Wow that is a lot! I don't live view at all(because obviously I cant  ) I do check my histograms periodically(to check the highlights) , so I'd say it's a fair comparison.

I have the sterlingtek BP511s, they're awesome :D

Great thread (for me) :) as i'm wondering the same. Just bought the 600D which is a great little camera. Has most of today's features but it doesn't even come close to ergonomics of my 40D though. You can feel it's a lower tier camera. I don't need all the gadgets but I need to be able to use the camera efficiently. Two dials and top LCD makes all the difference in the world for me. The 40D is quite beaten up now and I've been itching as hell to get my hands on a full frame camera for a while. So I figure I could exchange them for not a big price. While 5D mk2 would be a much more expensive investment.

I'm also starting to get invested in to prime glass so having FF and crop systems would give me more options. (Damn rental, it's their fault. Fast wide zooms are always booked out. I was forced to use 24L and 35L quite a few times )

Of all the cameras I've used ranging from the D800 to the 1Dmk4, there really aren't any cameras that offer enough over the 5Dc for me to shell out the extra moolah!!! If the 5D3 were closer to the 2k price point then maybe... it's a hard choice for me right now.

The only things that 'frustrate' me on the 5Dc are the aging (but still admirable) high ISO performance, inability to check critical focus on the LCD, and mediocre AF.

Bahhh I'm reverting back to film screw it :D

Wanna buy an Elan 7NE?

Anyway, my thoughts exactly. The 5D2/3 offer me nothing worth paying for. I find the AF on the 5D quite good for my purposes. If I won the lottery, I'd surely buy some better lenses. Ok, and maybe a 1Dx, but just because I could afford it. That is surely way beyond my talents.

Like the others have mentioned, the 5DII handles noise much better than the 5Dc. I upgraded to the 5DII about six months ago after owning a 5Dc for 5+ years. Coupled with the live view, bigger LCD screen, self cleanining sensor and better handling of low light, it was a no brainer for me to upgrade.

If you have the funds, I would definitely get the 5DII.

I've owned both. I couldnt differentiate between the photos from either camera when I had both at the same time - pretty much laid to rest the debate in my head about the "film-like quality" of the 5Dc - it either doesnt exist or I wasn't perceptive enough to see it. I did gain about a stop of high ISO performance, but that shouldnt make or break a purchase for anyone.

As a landscape shooter, Live View was the biggest seller for me. I really wanted to try the 24 TS-e but was not comfortable using it without being able to see my tilt/shift adjustments as I made them. And, a sensor without dust bunnies was really nice, too. The extra resolution was also nice for printing larger.

So if the 5D2 is about a stop better than the 5Dc in ISO, and the 6D is about a stop or more better than the 5D2.... Then I'm looking at a 2-3 stop high ISO improvement by going from 5Dc>6D? That might be worth it with the hyper-sensitive center point...

Then again I am seeing some screamin deals on 5D2's.... 1200 for a very lightly used 5D2 with 28-135 and a 270EX???? 1300 for a sub 1k actuation 5D2 and six batteries/four 32gb cards? I can't wait til my tax return gets here, I'm going to pull the trigger. If I don't like it I'll just re-sell it.

Thanks for the input very much, I guess I'll just see if the 5D2 is right for me first hand.

You just answered your own question. If you're going to upgrade, upgrade. ;)

At ISO 3200+ the banding is improved definitely, but otherwise there's not much difference:

The 5D doesn't have a 3200+. It can't possibly band there. It can't even go there.
