I shoot a lot of indoor sports and dance recitals. I use a 7D with a 70-200mm 2.8 vr 2. The 70-200 works out fantastic in most cases. Recently my daughter started dancing for a team that goes to comps in gyms. Most of these gyms are very small venues, some have no stands, just the sidelines therefore the 70-200 is just too big.......... This is where I start to contemplate the 24-70 2.8 vr 2......Id assume it should be plenty fast. Not as fast as a prime but primes wont fit well for what I do. I need the zoom. The other factor holding me back from the 24-70 is the lack of I.S.....While I.S. may not be completely needed it sure would be nice to have and to be honest it just kind of bugs me that @ 2k + it comes without it...Has anyone had experience using the 24-70
in dark, poorly lit gyms? .....Opinions on its performance and opinions on other possible lenes that may work better. Thanks in advance.

The Tamron 24-70 2.8 has VC(IS), and a great one at that.

Yes I have read up on that lens. It is impressive about a grand cheaper with VC....only thing it doesnt have is a red ring....Do you have any hands on experience with it?

I think you would get more responses in the lens section. But why not a prime like the 85 1.8? I've seen some great dance recital pics using that lens

Well, if the 70-200 is too long for these venues then an 85mm prime is certainly not going to be the answer. 85 > 70.

For the OP, I've used a Canon 24-70/2.8L to shoot basketball from under the net when I wanted to get the action in the paint and the 70-200 was too long. It worked very well and would probably be an excellent choice for these dance competitions.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII
