Hey guys,

Trying to decide on some new lens purchases in the near future.
This will be for the 5D and 5DII shortly.

Either the Canon 16-35 2.8 or Samyang 14mm 2.8
I know they are two pretty different lens but I'm only interested in which would make a better lens purely for astro shots?

Also how would both of the above on the 5d/5dII compare to the 11-16 tokina & 7D which I currently use? Is there enough of a difference to be worth the switch?

Well they're all f/2.8, and the Canon is a L lens, correct? So I would believe the L would give very good results.

I agree, the Canon. It's FOV would be simlilar to the Tokina you already have. I have the same Tokina and use it all the time for widefields. I usually make night movies with it. With dark skies you can stack images in DSS get very nice results.

For astrophotography, you're going to have manually focus (or use LV) since it will be so dark out. The Samyang will definitely serve you well. But the 16-35mm will give you greater flexibility. Considering that it does not appear that you have a UWA for FF, you probably should go with the 16-35mm.

No prob!

The only issue with the 16-35, is the corners are not great. But then, Canon doesn't make anything wide with good corners except for the 17TS-E which is why it has been becoming more and more of my new workhorse.

But my default night lens that's always on the camera, is the 16-35.
