What would you suggest using these two lenses on?

Now, the 2 lenses in my signature, what would you suppose the best application would be for them? I'm still trying to grasp what is good for what. So, I guess I'm just curious of what other people would find them useful for.

I have both of them and use them to take pictures of people a lot. The wide angle lens is great for walking around with. Most people prefer more reach, but I like wide angle pictures a lot.

I'D HAVE TO AGREE WITH SOLINGER ON THE 17-40, lots of digital users want more reach it's surprising how few you actually see with a wide angle lens attched especially considering the 1.6 fovcf:cool:

Wide is going to be good for portraits where you need to show more context. You can shoot people and show their surroundings. You can shoot objects more easily as it's quite close focussing. It does allow a certain amount of creative use of angles at the wide end. And of course, the classic landscape.

The 50mm is slightly telephoto and generally a good choice for head and shoulders portraits.

These are just what would come to mind, but sometimes using the 'wrong' lens for a shot can make it work better. That's half the fun.

The 17-40 would be ideal for landscapes, shots of buildings in the city, and any other time you wanted to show a large scene. The 50mm is great for low-light, portraits, and learning about depth of field.

I would just keep the 17-40 on most of the time unless you needed a faster lens for low light.
