Steel wool experiments

So my friend comes up to me and says that there's this technique he's been dying to try out, using ignited steel wool and long exposures... I look up the technique and say *Neat let's try this one out!*

So we took our cams and woolly steel along to Buskett woodland (not the safest location for fire right?) and set about whizzing the smoldering steel wool around. Here are some results!

We had a few near misses with stray smolders reaching some dry leaves and also one smolder flinging on our bag of steel wool! Though luckily we came prepared with buckets of water... and quick reflexes ;)

Really like this technique and I do wish to experiment some more.

Chris.

Good stuff. DO be careful though, this stuff can cause serious damage really quick and as you saw, can start fires just as quick as well.

I'd hate to become the first person on record to have caused a large fire by spinning steel wool.

I have been wanting to try this out for forever but have never got around to it. Looks like a blast

Before my first attempt I ran a sprinkler in my back yard all day moving it to different spots to saturate the whole yard with water. That night, my second attempt resulted in a large piece of flaming steel wool landing on top of the house and rolling off onto the wet ground. If I do this again in the back yard I will have a ladder and a garden hose ready to go as well. :)

Right you are! Thankfully being Winter and all, the area was pretty damp so the risk was comparably low. But you can't be too careful so we were well aware of the possible risks!

This is a surprisingly easy and highly rewarding thing to do! I highly recommend :)

Thanks all.
Chris.

if you are referring to the area over the archway then yes those are leaves from a creeper. Being a woodland there were trees and leaves scattered everywhere :)

Glad to see so many positive responses!

Chris.
