There's more to making a good photo than numbers.
BUT, numbers are important as in the amount of "number of dollars" in the glass you are using.
One thing I've noticed with nature photographers (or any serious photographer) is they almost always have great glass. I don't know much about the G15 that you shoot with, but a quick google look at it and I'm going to guess that is not the optimal birding camera.

I've been reading at Wikipedia about things like focal distance, but the articles get too technical very quickly for a reader not educated in optics.
Being a self taught amateur photographer I know exactly what you are going through. I can not recommend YouTube enough for grasping ANYTHING photography, especially the basics. What's cool about YouTube is the person is not only talking to you, but most likely has some equipment in hand showing you as well. That really helped me grasp the concept!
