I have the 100mm f2 which I would say provides the best results behind the 70-200 L4. Quite frankly, I was looking to buy an 85mm but got a good deal on a factory refurb 100 I shoot indoor sports so 100 mm works well for me. In smaller areas I use the 50mm or 28mm primes. If I can or want to use a flash I have the zoom lens for general purpose.

I'd much rather be caught in a situation where I didn't have enough reach than where I had too much.

I use the 50, the 85, the 100, and (most recently) the 200 to shoot indoor sports. Both the 100 and 85 are excellent lenses optically, but I feel the 85 wins out in terms of ideal focal length overall when shooting from the sidelines. If you shoot from the bleachers, the 100 might be better. I use two bodies and switch the primes periodically just to experiment with different focal lengths in different parts of the gym.

Thank you all for replying. I have decided to go for the 100mm. The price on the used 100 is half of a new 85, so if im not satisfied i will probably be able to get most of it back.
Its funny that the review posted by dave makes the 100 out to be less sharp than the 85, when photodo says exactly the opposite?

A good price on one over the other would indeed be a good deciding factor.

If you look hard enough, you could probably find people who didn't like both lenses. I guess you must just believe the vast majority who do and make your own mind up when you get it (resale values are quite high anyway).

Another advantage is: you now also have an excuse to get a 85/1.2L in the future ;)

I could actually get this lense used, for $1550,- (lowest price on a new unit is listed at $2100,- here in DK)

I decided against it, based on reported (somewhat) slow AF and the brick build. If the 100mm doesn't live up to my expectations maybe I will trade up for the 85L or 135L.
