I currently have the 24-70 V-I and was thinking about selling it and purchasing the new version II. This is probably the lens that is most on my camera so i thought i would be a good idea and get the new version.

I was wondering if the version II has the same interior mechanics as the version I where when you zoom in and out, the lens runs on internal tracks to move back and forth.
Also, is the v-2 that much better in IQ?
Thanks in advance, Al

Version II lengthens when you zoom to 70 (reverse of version I). Version II was worth the upgrade for me. Much sharper, subjectively faster AF, and subjectively better IQ.

Check out the posting at http://www.lensrentals.com …-f2-8-ii-resolution-tests (external link) and some followups posted elsewhere there about the new version of this lens.

Lensrentals handles a lot of these lenses (70 copies of the Mk II and counting) and they also have one or two articles on their blog about variation and wear and tear problems with the first version. They have disassembled one of the new ones and report that Canon appears to have addressed some of the design issues that led to the original version getting out of calibration due to wear. Only time and use will truly tell, though.

The new version does not zoom in the same way... so it uses a much smaller lens hood. It's shorter and lighter weight, but a larger diameter (uses an 82mm filter instead of 77mm).

The resolution tests at Lensrentals.com are pretty impressive. The new version of the lens out-resolves anything else in its class, and even some top primes.

I'm still using ver. 1 myself... I imagine I'll upgrade some day. But I have other lenses that, for me, have higher priority and I'll be upgrading first (70-200/2.8 IS to the Mark II, for example).

no. it's a regular zoom (thank you god!). for years many on this forum touted the backasswards zoom design of the brick--which necessitated fitting the lens with a bag hogging bucket hood--as a superior design.

but it wasn't.

the brick was plagued with copy variations which worsened as the lens loosened and aged (lensrentals).

a sharp, tight copy of the brick is a very good lens but the successor is just stunning especially from f2.8 to f4 or so.

Exactly what i was looking for!

Thanks for help guys. I never had a problem with version 1 and was fortunate enough to acquire a very sharp copy from day 1 a few years ago when i bought it.

Ill be keeping an eye on pricing and performance of v2 and will be upgrading when im ready to go.

Thanks again guys.
