I had my 40D in my bike bag and ran back in the house to grab my sunglasses and my bike tipped over. I had to shoot a portrait and I could only get it to fire two times. Later that same day I tried a bunch of things (removing battery, turning on an off, etc.) then I pushed the AF button and it started firing again. I probably shot 200 shots at a basketball game that night. Right at the end of the game it quit firing again.

I switched batteries the next day and it started firing again. Then I went out to do some nature photography the next morning and it wouldn't fire.

I tried removing both batteries and leaving them out over an hour. The clock reset box came on when I powered back up. But it would not fire and hasn't fired since.

It is focusing fine. Have tried multiple lenses.

Anyone have any ideas of what may be causing the problem?

In the meantime I bought a used 40D with only 172 actuations.

Any help would be appreciated. I have really enjoyed this camera!

Knock the 40d in the opposite direction. It will re-align the thing that is out of alignment.

1Ds (Killed by bird crap), 5d2 (never to be taken apart!), 300d IR (fianlly put it back together), 35L, 40mm pancake, 85mm 1.8, Tamwrong 28-75 2.8 (really good lens!) and a load of spare parts!

Is that a serious suggestion, Photosurgeon? If so, how should I knock it? Thanks in advance.

I had a 40d in a camera bag, and dropped it from about shoulder height. The camera started acting just like you described. I sent it to canon and they repaired it, cost me $180. The service estimate did not state what they fixed, it just said "camera does not power, fix to working condition".

Hope this helps, good luck!

I love my 40D, but if I read your post right, you have a second one that is essentially new, I'd use that and (in my book) it would be worth at least having Canon determine what fixing your original would cost -- you didn't say how heavily used it is or what condition, but it is still worth $300+ and I'd fix mine if it broke. I'm looking at upgrading, but do not intend to sell my 40D -- it is a great camera.

dnauer: I've used my 40d a lot, shooting sports and nature. But I've treated it very well, so it's in really good shape.

How does one find out how many actuations are on the camera?

I've been very happy with the camera.

Thanks for your input jiddle.

Just wanted to comment that I tried photosurgeon's idea...and it worked! Thank you. I had to rap it a second time, but so far, so good.
