Taking a subject from another thread, a few people expressed interest in a thread where everyone would try to decipher if the light in an image had been augmented by artificial light or if it was from natural light alone. Here are my first two images. One indoor and the other outside. (no cheating, I dont know how to strip the exif) It would be helpful to mention why you believe the shot is either natural or artificial light to help build discussions. :D

The outdoor shot used fill flash.. you can see the catch light in the eyes... also the shadow from the diffused sun light is falling forward towards the camera (looking at shadow at feet).

That's just my guess... but I'm new to this...

Also,, pic #1.. the lighting is just flat and for me not enough light in the eyes. Now im one of the guys that has said natural light shots look like crap compared to portraits with a flash or reflective device...I still prefer the look of blending the flash with the ambient to get a better look. But, and a big but for me, Im going to make some concentrated efforts to using natural lighting a bit more in my workflow this year. Ive attended a few workshops this off season and Im going to a 3 day workshop with Cliff mautner. So looking forward to experimenting a bit with all natural lighting. Biff Olhm uses all natural a ton so some of the stuff he does has caught my attention BUT I still think you get best results with a flash and blending it with ambient so you cant tell...unless you see a catchlight:lol:

NICE. He'll whip your flash-loving butt into shape real quick. :p I shot a wedding alongside him a while back and basically got a workshop experience out of watching him work. He's a great guy too.

LOL Im with you, Mike. I told someone the other day, 90% of my shots are flash. The only bad thing about is that it makes shooting children difficult for me. The slow shutter speed combined with their physical inability to stand on one spot for more than 2 seconds is a real killer. :D
