Hey all you car/truck photogs,

Have you dreamed of getting a job for car or truck magazines?

I heard Photography-on-the.net mentioned (the host got the name kind of right) on a podcast called CarsForALiving.com (external link). The podcast is all about getting into all aspects of the car/hotrod/truck/etc industry. The host read my letter on Podcast Episode #22 (external link)
It was regarding doing a future show to share how you all can get into the car industry with your photography talents. The host did it and so can you. They will do a future podcast dedicated to the subject.

Check out the podcast. It's well worth the time. :)

I get it, its a trick question. No money to be made in auto photography for 99.9% of the people who try.

Nope... I came here to share some information for those of you that may be interested in getting your cool photography in the magazines.

Thanks for asking!

James,

It wasn't a trick question. :)

You gave a statement that's almost true, but it doesn't have to be. There are people on Photography-on-the.net taking great photography and there are some great opportunities out there if they had a little more knowledge of how to actually get into the magazine and other media outlets and make some money. That's the reason I am sharing Cars4ALiving.com podcast with everyone.

In the future, if my employer is looking for photographers that can write...I will be posting those opportunities on this forum to help fellow POTN members. This is a great forum, why not support it in a way that I can? ;)

You could say that about all forms of photography.

Can you tell me exactly where in the hour long program the details of this were covered? I skipped around a bit in the program and found it to be more of an interview completely unrelated to photography. No offense, but I don't have an hour to listen to some old guys talk about cars I'm not interested in. I would be very interested in listening to a 5 or 10 minute conversation about the automotive photography world, even though I'm already involved in it.

Most of Hot Rod Magazine's photographers are the people who actually build the cars, and they're also the writers and editors.

Still I'd love to work for them some day, since I can do the first two pretty good. Just have to work on the last two :D

Actually they are not. Most of the publications rely on freelance photographers. As for the writing, much of it is done by the associate editors. Not everyone that can take a decent photo is capable of stitching a coherent sentence together, and vice versa.

I just said Hot Rod(but it's car craft also), never said "ALL" or even "Most" of the publications. I just said Hot Rod! :D

They list their names in the photo credit and writer credits, and you see David Freiburger (external link) postings the back of his 50D on instagram all the time.

Also if you watch Hot Rod TV he always has it around his neck... Jeff Smith from Car Craft is also doing most of their shoots.

Curious as to who your employer is?

My employer is Continental Corporation. The parent company to a smaller company known as Continental Tires. I work in the technical publications department. I help produce service manuals and owner's manuals for some big and little known OEMs. My job includes photographing, illustrating, photo editing, writing manuals, and turning wrenches on top secret and not-so top secret cars and vehicles.

In my free time, I write and photograph for Camaro Performers magazine. I also do other stuff on the net for fun to promote my books and photography.

Well,
If your living is in cars and you're in a car-related business...the podcast CarsForALiving.com is for you...well maybe if you have more than 5 or 10 minutes.
With that said, the episode I mentioned in the first post (C4AL Episode #22) is a touch on getting into the media...which they will be dedicating a whole episode to the subject in the future. That future podcast will be a whole hour...so be ready.
The 10 minutes on this episode starts at minute 11.09 and ends at about minute 19.46.
I hope this helps. :)

Take care,
