An interesting hobby and great pics. What type of motor powers the rotors, electric or gas?

Alan they are either nitro methanol power engines or electric motors. Things are moving away from fuel to electric as batteries become more powerful.
Both helicopters here are electric.

Old faithful
Raptor 50 = 50 size nitro engine
Notice the flybar (used to stabilize the helicopter) perpendicular to the main blades. This is old school helicopter. Newer ones as above don't have the flybar. Electronic gyros now assist in stabilizing the helicopter.

I had a control lined model aircraft when I was a kid back in the 1950's, which was powered by a diesel engine. There was a screw on the top of the cylinder, which had to be screwed down to produce compression. If i remember correct it developed about 2cc, how things have changed.:)

Thanks for your explanation, I shall watch this thread with interest.

I also used to build and fly model planes propelled by Jetex engines. They were great fun, but unfortunately the fuel only lasted for a few seconds, so they were bets used in gliders. The motor would take the plane to a descent height, burn out and allow the plane to glide back to the ground, fond memories. It would appear that they can still be purchased today.
