Sounds like there were some other POTN'ers down in Florida this past weekend. I was originally scheduled to visit Vancouver for snowy owls, but I heard they left so I switched my trip to Ft Myers. Here are a few shots:

Venice Rookery great blue herons:

Honeymoon Island black skimmers (terrible light but at least the birds added some color!):

That's a great set Liz especially the owls. I also went to Honeymoon Island but was disappointed by the trail this year because of all of the controlled burns.

Thanks, I used the 500 on all of these, except for the skimmers where I used the 100-400. I thought they looked comical, all standing there facing into the wind. They let me get pretty close, as long as I stayed low. The photos have all the EXIF so you can check out more details if you want.

Thanks, Honeymoon Island was a nice place, but I agree that it's tough for photography. I hiked the whole trail with my 500 and tripod. The light was terrible on the afternoon I was there (same day I got the skimmers) and so I went back in the morning. But the park doesn't open until 8, and by the time I got up to the trail and into position, it's almost 8:30. The good light is practically gone by then. Plus it seems that afternoon light angle would be best. Too bad it was cloudy then! I didn't get any osprey shots that I thought were particularly good, so I was disappointed by that. Here's the best one. Its wings look weird, so I think they must be wet. I swear I didn't over sharpen!

Great stuff, Liz! I'll have to hit Honeymoon Island next trip down. Glad to see you got your burrowing owls, and a pair at that!

Thanks! Honeymoon Island is worth a visit. The trail is about 2 miles long but pretty easy to walk. I think afternoon is a better time for photography, because the light angle is better for most of the nests, and also because the park doesn't open until 8 in the morning. Check the causeway on the way to the island for shorebirds and more osprey. It costs $4 to get into the park.

Thanks! They were a nice unexpected find.

I went back the next morning and since the park didn't open until 8, I got to the beach at sunrise (around 7) and looked for them again. They were in a different spot, but I got some good light on them, although I like the composition of the previous photo better.

i like them all. honeymoon island is nice. a little further up the road we've got a few active eagle nests and the osprey seem to be more plentiful than ever this year. i might have to head to desoto this weekend and see if i can track down that owl.

We have osprey here in MN, but not nearly as many and usually the nest platforms we have aren't really accessible for photography (probably good for the osprey.) It was fun to see them. Look for the owl nest at the picnic area by the north beach. There is temporary orange construction fencing surrounding some trees. It seems like morning would be best to get good light on them.

Yes, definitely worth a trip, and a nice break from winter for those of us in colder climates.
