Which hoods PHYSICALLY fit a 135L? (Even if they're the "wrong" hood for the lens?)

Hi guys,

So, I usually use hoods for protection, but I don't like how massive the hood on the 135L is. I do mostly street photography with it, and the hood just about doubles the size of the lens, which I'm not happy about.

I've been using the lens without a hood and flare hasn't been an issue, but I want something to protect it from accidental bumps.

It comes with an ET-78 II hood (I'm guessing E is just a placeholder digit, T is for telephoto and 78 is the hood mount diameter?).

Ideally, I'd like a smaller hood, so that leaves wide angle hoods...would any (all?) of the EW-78 hoods work on this lens? I see that there are C, D, E, etc variations of the hood...do they all mount fine to a 135L just have different size/shaped petals?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The 35L hood works perfectly. I sometimes used that instead when I had my 35L.

Thanks! That's the EW-78C, and I've seen pictures of 135Ls with the EW-78B II...so I guess most of the EW-78s (all) fit?...now I just have to figure out which one I want, as far as size goes...

The 78 refers to the diameter of the lens hood mount so logically, all lens hoods with the same number are interchangeable in terms of size.

Bodies: Canon 500D | Canon EOS M

The ES-78 (50/1.2L) doesn't fit so it's not all 78mm hoods.

I've just tried the 135/2 with the hoods from all the lenses listed below and only the 35/1.4 hood fits (the 180/3.5 uses the same as the 135/2). I also have an EW-78 (35-350L) and a EW-78BII (28-135) that fit.

Thanks, so it sounds like the EW-78-series is a winner for me, then?

Hmm...now...10 bucks for an el cheapo eBay one or spring for the brutally overpriced Canon hood....

Get the cheapo knock off then spray paint it or wrap it with vinyl, it will look just as nice(or nicer) as the Canon one.

I'm not too worried about the look, I'm worried about the fit...will they fit as nicely/snugly as the OEM hood?

I wouldnt pay the overpriced one just for a canon stamp on it..I bought a $5 ebay one for my 17-40L when i had it and it fit VERY tight. I wouldnt say the OEM fits better my 100-400 OEM hood doesnt stay on at all

I have two hoods from Fotodiox that I picked up on Amazon for $6 each and they fit great (10-22 & 15-85). Seems to be equal in quality comparing to my two OEM hoods (200 & 100-400). Not sure if you can get Fotodiox where you are located at though.

05xrunner, my hood on the 100-400 is very tight going on and off. FWIW.

I have used the hood from the 35L, as mentioned above.

You'll get even better protection from a dedicated third-party hood, which you shorten down keeping the cylindrical form.

I did that for my 100 L IS Macro.

Hmmm...did you just cut the last half of it off with a fine-toothed saw? I have no tools in Korea...plus I like the look of the petal hoods much better haha...but that's certainly an idea to consider!
