hey guys,

I'm about to log off the OSX side of things and go over to *shudder* Windows for the DSS work.

However, I thought I'd share this shot.
50mm, f/2.0 @10" with mirror lock, 1250 ISO.

What is:
-The bright star in the upper left?
- The cluster in the middle? (I'm guessing the 7 Sisters? It was my ref point)
- The biggie...what's that green guy to the right? It's in every shot but not in my bias frames or dark frames that I know of.
Is it that comet that's been hanging around?

I took a total of 52 light, 8 dark, and 18 bias and I'm gonna go comp 'em in DSS. Why those numbers? Because I have no idea what I'm doing. :P

The 7 sisters in the middle, Jupiter to the upper left and an internal reflection of Jupiter in the lower right.

Steve, is such a party pooper! Haha. I would have said its ufo!

However, I think I can see a moon at jupiter's 11 o'clock, as well as in the reflection, so confirms it I guess.

Nice image even with the reflection, keen to see how the stack goes. Also, the feeling of not knowing what I'm doing is still with me. The more I fumble around, the greater respect I have for the early astronomers.

hehe well I'm glad he pooped on the party with a lot of graciousness and couth!

It's such a noob mistake on my part...ugh!

I've actually got a ton of images from that night, all set for stacking.
Trouble is, even with Forrest Tanaka's video I'm lost in DSS. My images turn out
- as a tall, skinny image (despite my careful, and frequent recentering, etc)
- oriented in weird ways (I don't even recognize what I'm looking at--and I took the photos!)
- very noisy and
- very pink.

Oh and I blew it on the exposure too...too long. :P
I got some decent series from Orion but I need a serious DSS 101 session before anything good happens with those. I totally agree with you...serious respect for the guys who pull this stuff off!

I don't know whether it's still the case, but it used to be that for newer cameras, you had to use the beta version of DSS or you got a weird image. This was particularly frustrating because there was no mention of the beta version on the DSS website, only on the DSS Yahoo group, and also because it seemed to stay in beta forever despite having no obvious problems. So, what version of DSS are you using? Your mention of getting a tall skinny image makes me think that it's too old.

Hey Jim,

I'm using DSS 3.3.2 and unfortunately their RAW/FITS development
Settings don't have the T3i/KISS X5/600D in there.
The latest version they have is the 400D.

Should I switch to .jpgs or pick a different cam profile?
3.3.2 is the latest version right?

screen shots:

TIFF, once exported to PS. 125 mb file, but it's an absolute mess.
Looks like this all blown out:

This is what it looks like up close. It's one-colored, noisy, and blase.
I've gotten better results noob-stacking in CS5 by hand, but there's so many settings in DSS
that the odds of one of them being wrong is pretty high.

Get the free adobe program that converts your raw CR2 files to the standard DNG and use the DNG file.

Nope, 3.3.3 beta 47 is the latest, here: http://deepskystacker.free.fr …epSkyStacker333beta47.rar (external link)

Like I said in my last message, I'm clueless as to why they don't have a link to it anywhere other than on Yahoo Groups (some people don't like Yahoo, and for good reason), or why it's been a beta version for so long.

I don't know if it supports the T3i, but since it supports the T2i, I imagine that it would.

AWESOME! Thanks so much...I kinda missed what you were saying at first, but it makes sense now.
Stealth, I just might try that...I think I can convert them to TIF too, so that may help.

I've just quickly tried the latest version posted by Jim and that worked with my 600Ds raw files.
