Hi,

I have a friend on a big time budget who wants to get her first dslr. I've been keeping an eye out on craigslist for her, and came across two deals. I can't decide which one to recommend her, they seem pretty equal.

First deal: $225

Rebel XTi
18-55 I
Tamron XRDi 28-300mm macro zoom
Polarizing filter (doesnt mention for which lens)

Second Deal: $260

Canon 20D
18-55 I
Camera Bag
16GB cf card

Thoughts? Or are neither worth her time. My gut has me leaning towards recommending the XTi

Xti. It's got a newer sensor, same AF, better LCD and comes with two lenses.

Go with 20D. A lot better sensor and handling.
Your accessories including battery charger etc is also ready for upgrading into newer XXD bodies.

Only good deal about XTi is the Tamron lens range that is actually a useful tool only for beginners. You would be disappointed with the softness in extreme rang of FL and would want a better lens soon, but then a newbie won't notice that.

Sensor, no. Handling, maybe, depending on what you are used to.

I would say spend a tiny bit more and get a new or used T2i and the nifty fifty or pancake. I got my T2i for $300 new last year and those two lenses are $100 each. If it's between those two choices though, XTi.

Neither!
Old cameras may break any time depending on how it was used. Plus small crappy LCD screens would turn off a newbie.

A t1i or t2i won't cost all that much more and will be significantly better.

If you have to stick with only those two choices, the xti, only because it will give them 2 lenses to play with as they learn.
