Would you change from a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di on full frame?

Hi,

Later in the year I'll be heading to Disneyland Paris with the family and obviously as taking pics will not be my priority I'd like to take the full frame with a good walkabout, currently for me thats the Tamron 28-75 but sometimes I could do with going wider and longer, but I love the 2.8.

I have considered the 24-105 but thats "just" a f4.

Are there any realistic options?

Cheers.

It's a compromise. I found the 28 to 75 not to be wide enough and slow to focus.
The 24 to 105 gives you IS-more reach and a wide angle.

A G Series. No joke.

I went to Disney with my family in April of '12 and challenges myself to take just a G. It worked out great. Leave the bulky camera at home or at least bring a G or something for the parks and just take the SLR for when the kids are asleep.

I thought the 24-105 wasn't quite as sharp.

24-70 2.8 II is really nice :D

tamron 24-70 2.8 VC might be worth a look, keep your 2.8, add IS and the extra 4mm on the wide side

Cheers all - I have a Lumix LX7 so that would no doubt be in the pocket anyway :)

I'f the IQ would drop on the 24-105 then its a no no straight away, I'll take a look at the Tammy 24-70 II as that looks to tick a few boxes straight off.

Personally I would use 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom with FF camera, but then leave it at home (or safely in the hotel safe) and carry my S95 during days at Disneyland! I would rather have a small camera zipped safely in a jacket pocket while enjoying the great rides with my family!

Thanks all - I've done a lot more research and have just bought a 24-105 second hand, but only after getting original images etc and it looks pretty sharp to me.

Luckily I'm in a position where I can buy first to try it out and sell on if needed.

I did consider the various 24-70 options but there was too little gain for too much outlay - I could never justify that, at least not in one jump.

I will be following your advice though and despite (hopefully) changing my walkabout lens I'll just take the LX7 along as it will do the job nicely and not get in the way.

24-105 is a decent upgrade, IMHO. I've done that myself after going back and forth. You'll learn to love the smaller aperture and getting some of the background in the composition. I think that lens expands some photography skills.

Thanks - thats good to know as last night when I was negotiating for the lens I was still very unsure - funnily enough the tipping point in its favour was not anything to do with IQ, AF or any of the usual things, it was something that I don't usually give two hoots about - weathersealing - the idea I could still keep on taking pics even if it rained.

Oddly after some discussion with my wife, involving questions such as "do you just want it or need it?" and "so how much will it really cost?", she then came up with "so, what will it do that your current one won't?" - thats when I realised that there was something it would that my Tamron wouldn't.
