So I just got my Sigma 30mm from B&H and I'm running through the basic tests and I've noticed a really loud clicking sound when I focus while in Live Mode or in the Video setting. I'm not sure if this is normal, so I'm checking here to see if anyone else has experienced anything like this.

I took a quick test video of my wife's Valentines flowers, and around 11 seconds you can really hear it when I half press and release the shutter button. It's audible before the 11 second mark, but not so much on this video. I hear it every time I half press the shutter button in live/video mode. Is this the aperture blades opening and closing, and is this normal? If not, should I send back to B&H for a replacement, or to Sigma to see if they can fix it (and potentially calibrate it, if I've noticed any back/front focusing)?

Thanks for your help!

The first noise I hear in that video is the autofocus motor and later on you're definitely activating the aperture (you can see the change in DOF and brightness and it sounds like what the aperture sounds like, just amplified). Both are going to make noise and while you shouldn't hear much with your bare ear (they're not inaudible but they shouldn't be loud), I would expect your camera to pick up the noise since it's travelling through the body in to the microphone directly.

The auto focus noise doesn't bother me, it sounds like what I expected it to. But the aperture noise is what concerns me. I can clearly hear it every time I press the shutter button. I may try to record from my cell phone to get an external mic to pick up the sound. It's REALLY loud compared to any of my other lenses.

Here is the sound from behind the camera via my cell phone mic. The auto focus sound is super quiet from this vantage point, but the aperture sound is still very loud.

I can't really believe this would be "normal". Please help!!

normal..the sound your hearing is the aperture blades closing real fast focusing in live mode. stop your lens down to like f8 and press DOF button. same sound..look inside the lens as it focus in live view you will see it stop the blades down real fast. mine only seems to make the blades stop down in certain lighting conditions. but the sound your hearing is that..it has nothing to do with the focus motor.

I just picked up my 30 1.4, the aperture on it is probably louder than all of my Canon lenses, but it's normal. In normal shooting (with the mirror and shutter actuating) you'll never notice it.

Noticed similar thing with my lens as well. Mine is actually more louder. In live view, lens moves in small steps/increments while focusing. Each increment makes this loud click noise.

OP,
Did you notice lens making more clicking noise with AI-Servo. Even shooting with static subject after locking the focus, my copy keeps making clicking noise.

I've had the Canon 50 1.4 for about 13 years. I would like to replace it but I don't want the current Sigma or another identical one from Canon either. I'm waiting for either one to release a new one that hopefully addresses some of the issues each lens has.
