Can novices join in, and do we need to cough up any $$$ to do this?

Yep, novices can...strobist is about learning about off-camera lighting, so as long as you can do that (commander mode or fleabay triggers), you're good to go (plus there will be other gear there as well).
We're just covering studio rental and MUA costs (models are TF*) so it's a pretty reasonable $25 at this point.

Pentax K20D, 77Ltd, 43Ltd, Sigma 17-70, 60-250/4, crapload of Strobist gear (SB28's, RP JrX Studios, Einsteins, WL, Speedo BD, softboxes, grids, etc.)

Great...

Gonna have to bail. The plan is to do a post-New Year's party on the 9th. Maybe another time.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

I buy stuff at Hunts that I need to touch.. I bought my backpack camera bag there and my slingshot camera bag too, otherwise like mumbles pointed out, I shop at B&H and lately Amazon.. Amazon has been beating or matching everyone's prices and as long as you are in no rush, it's nice to save money.

Ditto. Bought all my bags at Hunts and a few doo-dads, but the Internet gets most of my business.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Well the third car is what i'm personally trying to avoid. Driving around Boston in 2 cars is hard enough. We have 8 right now. That's two cars....

Ok just to make this official:

When: 1/9/10 Time: 6pm
Where: http://maps.google.com …&resnum=1&ved=0CAoQ8gEwAA (external link)
Who: Scottes, FlyFisher, Jackie, Mumbles, Harm, Kpratte, HornyTurbo, Dovka, Paul.
We 'could' bring a third car, but i'd suggest the driver A)Know Boston Inside-out, or B) Be extremely good at following people and keeping up... Sometimes parking is difficult, but if they are willing to go through the hassle, hey, the more the merrier....

That may be a good option. Keep it clear if you don't mind. We may take you up on it! :) We're very high budget here.

I have to bail folks. I need to help my mother the next day - 4 AM wake-up followed by 5 hours of driving. I hate family responsibilities, but I can't say no to my mother.
