So I'm getting into film photography and I'm looking up scanner information. But I'd like some advice from you guys.

I search on amazon and see several types of scanners. I think I'd prefer a dedicated 35mm film scanner but how would that work? Do I have to open the film canister and feed the film in myself? Cut it? Are there any where I just feed it the roll and it takes care of itself? I'm a beginner so I don't need top of the line equipment but I would like something that would yield decent size quality prints if I were to print.

If there's any other info I'd need to know that I left out, please school me on this subject. I sent a roll of film to a lab nearby and they have to send it out to get developed. Is that normal? If I could cut some of my cost down, my pocket would greatly appreciate it.lol

Thanks

Most consumer film scanners don't have auto-feed. There are some decent Plustek scanners that do a pretty good job. Here's what you want to look for:

1. 48-bit color depth, 16-bit gray scale
2. Digital ICE for taking care of dust and scratches (you use this on color, but never on B&W)
3. Ability to do both film strips and mounted slides
4. Native scan resolution of at least 4000 dpi, 7200 dpi if you can swing it
5. Compatibility with VueScan or Silverfast (I prefer VueScan)
6. Ability to do multi-pass (this improves scan quality substantially)
7. Ability to do multi-exposure (at least two scans of the same film)

You should strongly consider only shooting color negative or B&W and not color slide film. Kodak Ektar 100 can give you 12 stops of dynamic range, while Kodak Portra and Fuji Pro 160 films can get you 14 stops. (By contrast, my 5Dii only gets about 10 stops of useful dynamic range).

You should strongly consider buying the ColorPerfect plug-in to get top-notch color balance (which can be tricky, particularly with color negatives). This will save you a lot of time.

And remember, with film you want to expose for the shadows (unlike digital, where you expose for the highlights).

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I just started with film myself and you can either make sure to get C41 process film so the local guys can develop it, or you could learn to do it yourself.

I'm mostly shooting B&W and I'm using Kodak BW400CN(I've tried XP2 with mixed results) so I can drop it off at CVS/Walgreens/etc.. I just have them process and scan to save some scratch, I'll dump the CD into the kiosk if I feel like getting any immediate prints otherwise it goes into the computer.

I tried some Tri-X but I'm waiting on a mailer so until I'm able to sort out a darkroom and learn how to develop film myself I'll be sticking to C41 for the most part.

Hey guys, going to the Bahamas (atlantis) and need to get suggetions on which lenses to take with me. My gear is below . My wife also gave me permission to spend $1000 on a new lens to take with me. I like the 17-40 for the wide, but also like like the 70-200 f4 IS. Help!!!

Firstly, you've got a great ol' lady!

Secondly, why not just rent both that way you can see which you like better and pick it up when the two of you get back? That way if anything happens to either lens while there your out nothing except the rental and rental insurance fee.

I use a Hasselblad Flextight X5 scanner. If you can't afford one, you can rent time on them at EP Levines.

I would take a 24-105. under $1000 and since Bahamas is always bright, you'll be shooting F8+

24 is wide enough and I dont think you'll need more than the 105 on the long side

Yeah, gotta start cheering on Liverpool now, although they'll never replace Celtic FC in my heart.
