does anyone have a 85 1.8 and/or a 135L I can borrow for a day or two. I'm looking into getting one or the other. Will probably buy both in the future, but seeing which one will be best for me atm.

Have 85 1.2L II if that helps..

I've owned both. I've sold both, 135L was too weird a focal length for me. But if i had to choose between the two, the 135L wins for image quality. Hands down. 85 is great, it's actually an unsung hero in Canon's lineup. But once you use the 85 1.2, you get spoiled.

Sorry, just wanted to add my .02

Brendan, I've got the 40D and a 5Dc. My only lenses right now are a 50 1.8 and a 24-70. The weddings I've shot are all small events with small churches and small-ish reception halls. I've got some larger weddings lined up for this summer and know I should get a longer lens for my 40D. What would you recommend as a good addition, keeping in mind the poor ISO performance (usable 800 max) of the 40D?

I was thinking the 100 f/2, or save and get the 135 f/2. I think the 70-200 f/2.8 is too much for what it is (IS version 2) so I'm not going that route until next tax season. But I do need something between now and then.

Well i'd never discount the 70-200, even the MK1. The fact that i haven't picked up MKII speaks to that fact. It's really an amazing and versatile lens. I'm not a fan of prime long lenses for weddings, because we need to run around a lot and having something fixed like a 135L is dificullt as you'll constantly be running around.

That all being said the 135L is cheap. Relatively. Even though the 70-200MKI's are going for fairly cheap these days, they are still much more than the 135L.

You are kind of stuck in a hard place here. Sub-par ISO performance (means you can't really use the 70-200 F4). I guess in this case, the 135L may end up making sense. I've never owned the 100 F2, so i can't really say much about that.

Since you only have a handful of events, how about renting? Would that be cheaper? And then you can save most of your money to get the real deal next year?

One other good thing about the 135L is it retains value pretty good. So you could get it and sell it again easily. Hmm.

This is a toughy. I wonder how the Sigma 70-200 fairs? I've never used it before, but if it gets good reviews, that may be close in price to the 135L?

Like most Sigma lenses, the 70-200 is hit and miss based on copy (per reviews).

I hate to rent equipment when that money could go toward a lens instead. I've got some money set aside, and after a few weddings will have enough to spring for the 70-200 2.8. My first couple weddings are small, but the one I have in June is outdoor so there's no telling what will happen.

I'll rent if I have to, but I was hoping for a "in the meantime" type of solution.

Jeremy...If you want to try any of my stuff, I live in Salisbury. You can get a hold of me....If I am not using it, I would let you. I follow this section daily, don't post much here. Would like to meet up with people here, but 3 kids in multiple sports keeps me busy. Would love to do the Boston shoots and will someday! Let me know if I can help you, Jim

LOL. I didn't know you were married Kevin!

My wife keeps saying "if it's going to help you do more business and get better results, spend the money"... I'm the one who does the budgeting, needless to say.

It's because I haven't hit the buy button. She's looking at the keyboard like a "HAWK" HAHA

Yeah Jeremy, wife and 2 kids. I wish I can say the same thing. I don't really do wedding photos, I'm more concentrated on portraits with models. Don't make much money for me to be telling the wife that. Plus I gotta watch the jealous side, know how women can get pretty rough when they see their man shooting some other "hot" models. HAHA

I just picked up a new phone and bike. I'm done for the year. Thank god. Saving begins.
