As time goes by, the lens that stays on my camera has changed. I now find that for the most part my Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 Di VC is it. Since I started my 365 project on January 1 this year, I carry my 16-35 f/2.8L II, 70-200 f/2.8L IS II & the Tammy 24-70 in my bag with my 5DmkIII. Most of the time the 24-70 stays attached to the body. I find it easier to grab the camera and get a shot if I don't have time to change lens.

Since I dropped the Tamron 17-50 2.8, it is my Takumar 55mm 2.2. It has given me inspiration for a different kind of photography.

I started with a 5Dc and just upgraded to the Mark 3 but always consider my 24-105 as my go-to lens. It is just too darn convenient for the type of work I do.

In addition to wedding and social event work I do a lot of urban landscape. For the latter I carry the rig in a modded messenger bag I also use for work. The f/4 used to be a little limiting in low light for landscape work but this has become a non-issue with the 5D3.

It really depends on what I am doing. A portrait session is my 70-200 2.8 IS II, for landscapes my 17-40.

I keep a Sigma 85mm 1.4 on the body most of the time since I shoot a healthy amount of portraiture and flora images. I have multiple zooms but gravitiate to this prime a lot.

Canon 60D,18-55mm,55-250mm,50mm compact macro, AF ext tubes. Sigma 8-16mm uwa, 18-250mm, 85mm F1.4, 150-500mm

I need to use my 24-105 more since I moved from my 5D2 to the 5D3, I just need to make myself, I love this lens and it's tack sharp, but I got away from it due to the f/4 as well.

That's funny, Neil!
It used to be that my 400 f2.8 was "welded" to my 50D - similar to you and your 500mm. Over the past year and a half, however, I find myself changing lenses much more often. I'd say the big 400 only gets about 50% of the workload now.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

It really is a wonderful FF lens.

I used to shoot medium format film and the 24-105 covers the range of social event shots I needed when I used the old film format: 24mm for groups, 105mm for portrait and everything in between for walk-around candids and small groups.

I also shoot a lot for exhibition and print competition so it's wonderful for city projects as well as countryside. Some folks here denigrate it as "kit" lens just because it was typically bundled with the 5Dx. If by kit they mean lower quality that could not be farther from the truth. It is not a perfect lens but it is solidly built and razor sharp. "Kit" is just a marketting term for bundling this particular L.

I talked to the tech who repaired mine after 6+ years of heavy use and about 75K+ shots under all manner of weather conditions - aperture actuator servo thingy failed - and he said the lens is rock solid not lacking in quality.

Just sitting in the bag, waiting for general use then it is my Sigma 20-40 2.8 EX DG. This is a bit short on range, but I like the constant f2.8 max aperture. The range is not really a problem coming from a Pentax ME Super with 50 1.7 and then a 35-70mm zoom. My Sigma 28-300 seems to spend a lot of time attached when I am out and about though, I have always had a preference for longer rather than wider. Those two lenses though seem to cover me pretty well most of the time.
