So I am looking to mount my 10D on the basketball standard to shoot wide under the basket shots. I have been using a 20D with a 17-40L in this position, but I would like to swap it out with my 10D. The issue is at f4, I shoot ISO 1600 at between 1/320 and 1/250 with the 20D in this location. I will not shoot the 10D at anything higher then ISO 800 - so I need a faster lens for it. I have been thinking of using a Sigma 20 f1.8 here as focus speed will not make a difference since everything is prefocused, and edge detail isn't super critical. I am also a little concerned by flare, but so far the little L hasn't had too much of an issue with it, so I am not sure the Sigma would do worse - it may. I am also looking to do the same for soccer and place it in the back of the net there. Any ideas or alternatives would be appreciated.

thanks.

Okay, common you lens-perts - so this is the type of image I am trying to capture, I want floor to rim coverage on a 1.6x factor body.... only of course a lot better... hopefully this gives you all some idea to recommend a lens....

I had the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 for a short while. It would certainly give you the coverage you need.

Hmmm. You had to stop it down a fair bit (2.8 or below) before the edge detail was even remotely acceptable, which for me defeated the object of having the nice fast f/1.8 aperture. Don't ask me for samples as I've inevitably binned 'em  and, of course, I may just have had a bad example of the lens. Edge detail may not be that critical but it might come into play around the hoop which could go a bit fuzzzzzzzzy at f/1.8.

Anyway, I soon 'traded' it in for the Canon 15mm f/2.8FE... which is a vastly superior piece of glass but might be a bit too wide for your application... or maybe not with the 1.6x crop factor... but might be too slow aperture-wise?

Thanks... do you have any examples from the 15? It is listed as a fisheye, but I am not clear on how much of the effect you get on a cropped body. I can see where the eye effect would be cool, but I wonder if it would become old fast.... On another forum, the EF 20 2.8 was also recommended as well. I was hoping to got to 1.8 or 2.0, but then there is the issue of lack of DOF. Anyway.... if you (or anybody) have an example of the 15 (even better if it is on a 1.6x crop body), that would be appreciated - as isn't that much more then the sigma. Cheers.

Here's the 15mm in action on a 1.3x crop body. Wide open at f/2.8... and a good deal further away than you'll be if you're right under hoop. To see what the image would look like on a 1.6x crop camera, just take a chunk off all the way round... I hope you like my scientific approach

Doing the old finger cropping here.... could be intersting and would duplicate the 17-40L less. Trying to give the old 10D extra life here without breaking the bank. I wonder if I could find a good used copy somewhere...

Thanks for the help!

I've also heard some good things about the Sigma 15mm fisheye - so that might be worth a look as well for a bit less cash.

Here's a relevant thread over on ss.com:

...and don't forget you can de-fish the image in PS as well if need be.
