Currently I have a 7D, but, with the 100-400 it will not autofocus with the 1.4x.
By my calculation- max reach is 640mm.

I also have the 5D2 which is starting to annoy me with so very few focussing points.

I am thinking of selling it and getting a used 1D series which will autofocus the 100-400 with the 1.4x. Working out- max reach I would get 728mm

Would I see the difference between 640 and 728? Am assuming I can crop more heavily with the 1D's

mainly for wildlife

or shall I not bother!

You shouldn't notice a difference because you're getting 560mm no matter if it's aps-c,aps-h or full frame.

Agreed, I was also using the 1.6 (7d) or 1.3 (1D) to multiply up - was I wrong to do this?

It's more to get an idea of the magnification image off the camera, lens combo.

Firstly fov on your 7d without Tele is 160-640, with it is approx 224-896. On a 1d without its 130-520 and with is approx 182-728. You are gaining little by swapping up as the focal length without Tele on 7d is close to with on 1d. There is a simple way to fool your 7d into focussing with teleconverter on but it does involve putting electrical tape over some contacts. Google it and you will see there isn't much work to do it

Thanks, will try that. I have heard its slow to focus with pins taped , but would probably be using it for fairly slow animals.
