Hi,
I just bought a g1x last night, and hopefully it will be here Tuesday. I am going on a trip in a week, and will try to play with this camera a lot also before i leave, but also want try to get a head start on some simple settings. I will be basically sight seeing in Los angles, and then Vegas. I am going to shoot jpeg, and figure just go mostly av mode, auto iso...what about focus settings, etc....any help from you G1x users would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you're looking for a printed guide to reinforce the G1X's on-disk version , I can recommend this
Canon G1X: The Expanded Guide (Expanded Guides) by David Taylor

I normally shoot RAW+Jpeg and find the DPP software that comes with the camera to be really good. The odd thing is that by shooting RAW + Jpeg the G1X always produces standard JPEGS.
However , f you go down the JPEG only route you can tweak the JPEG settings to your liking. For me the standard settings do just fine.
Don't ignore Auto mode. It's very good as is the High Speed Burst Mode.

Focusing choices can be a little complex and it's worth understanding what continuous focusing, servo and frame setting means - so read the manual carefully.
Also , with the G1X "macro" doesn't mean Macro in the normal sense so be prepared to set "macro" at the tele end for any subject within 3 feet or so.

You'll soon get the idea ; it's pretty simple to use.

Oh my one Vegas tip....go into the Paris Hotel at 5pm and go up the Eiffel Tower for sunset at 5.30. Then photograph the Bellagio Fountains opposite during their show and the Strip as the lights go down. Best thing we did in Vegas!

taken with a Sony A100 : the G1X would make a better job
