I know we get these threads alllllll the time but everyone's so helpful about it I cant resist posting.

So I have a really sharp Sigma 50/1.4 that I want to get rid of because I just don't use it anymore. With a 35/1.4 and a 85/1.2 I never find myself needing the middle ground. I do however find myself needing a versatile zoom when I'm at events because I don't have two camera bodies and find it a hassle to switch between the two lenses. My sets become stale because of using one focal length.

My question is, 24-105 f/4 or 24-70 f/2.8. I'm aware of the perceivable IQ difference that the 2.8 is slightly better and that the slightly faster lens could be useful. But honestly I don't find that using f/2.8 over f/4 is going to help that much in low light events considering I feel that going up a stop or two in ISO or using a flash isn't that detrimental.

I've always looked away from the 24-105 being snobbish about it because its a kit lens but now I'm considering it because of the price and extra 30mm focal length. I guess the question is, should I get the 24-105 despite the extra stop, [Better] IQ? I haven't had first hand experience with either so I can't tell for myself.

Thanks!

While the 24-105L can come as part of a kit, it's not the same sort of "kit lens" as the EF-S18-55. It's a proper L-series zoom and it's a great lens, especially if you PP in Lightroom or similar, where you can correct the distortions it has.

I believe you kind of answered your question. If you don't need 2.8 the go with the extra focal length. Both lenses are high IQ

Yeah I kind of realized I did. But the question I have for myself is whether or not the 2.8 has IQ better enough to convince me to get it instead.

And the new 24-70/4 is a bit out of my range.

Many reviewers will tell you the 24-105 is sharper than the old 24-70. Maybe that's why they had to make the Super-Sharp 24-70 II.

You can compare the old 24-70 to the 24-105 here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=0 (external link)

Regarding its equivalent zoom range (39-168mm) on an APS-C DSLR the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS may not be the most sexy lens here but its performance figures are very impressive nonetheless. In fact the resolution results beat those from the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L

You don't need another lens, what you need is a 2nd body.

@msowsun
That's good to hear, might be just what I need to solidify my purchase.

And yes! I thought about this too, although it is in my future plans, carrying around two bodies to casual events or outings where I'd bring my dslr just seems like too much. I figured a versatile zoom would be more fitting.

On my 5DII the 24-105 is the lens I use most. When stopped down a bit it's very sharp.
