A bit of background story before the photos, but you can skip it if you want to. :)

I photograph the occasional event and pretty much all family events/parties etc. This time my sister-in-law wasn't having any of that as I'm the godfather of her new born and she wanted me in the pictures. I was then tasked with finding a good photographer and I did. I found someone who was way better than me and charged very reasonably for 3 hours and photos on a CD. Unfortunately, due to a change in event date, the photographer that I recommended was booked and instead of cancelling said he would send someone else. Knowing the situation with "photographers" in these parts, I asked him not to send anyone if it wasn't up to his quality standards.

Fast forward to a few days before the event my sis-in-law says she doesn't know who or have any contact details or photo examples of the new photographer. Come the day of the event I decide to carry my trusty camera bag with me. After seeing our paid photographer in action, I ditched enjoying the party and picked out my camera.

Here's a couple of shots (no more than 2 please) taken by the hired photographer followed by some photos I took.

These are taken by the hired photographer:

Didn't start this thread to show off, but more of a rant at what the situation is here. People are not ready to pay for a good photographer and this is what they are left with. What's more sad is the fact that some people even find this acceptable!!

What was the rate for the hired photographer? If they were paid $150 or less, the quality is what I would expect.

That's about the rate that was agreed with the original photographer, who does work that is better than mine (which I posted above). So the same rate was taken. There is a wide gap among photographers here as it's not as popular as in the US and is flooded with foreign workers who are looking to make a quick buck on the side. The rest are foreigners who are stay at home moms who charge about right and are a lot better at what they do. Professional photographers who do this for a living are few and far between. I have sometimes been forced to charge close to the above value just to get some events for experience.

And then there are times I've been told photographs like this are not good because there are some blurry things in the photo (http://farm9.staticflickr.com …81393232_2077e1d91e_c.jpg (external link)) LOL!! Clients can be just as bad here!

You may have found a budget photographer who was very good but the other photographer ( replacement) was obviously not. If the budget was $150 to $200, you get what you pay for and their images are ok for this rate.

Your work is better:)
