The Ghost Station ...

On something of a purge of pictures I forgot to post at the time when I actually took them, continuing with this visit to a former Metro station, now a museum of a former Metro station - Chamberi - known as The Ghost Station because it can be seen when passing through without stopping on Line 1 of Madrid's Metro.

The station was closed in 1966 when the two stations either side had their platforms lengthened, and this one was so close to both of them that there hardly seemed point in keeping it open, so they didn't ... it then became a popular place for graffiti and sleeping rough, despite the fact that the line still passes through the station. It's now been restored and re-opened as a museum ...

Theres a similar station here in Manhattan but I doubt they'll turn it into a museum.

I'm no Underground transport enthusiast but it was nice to go and look around a nicely restored station, and hear about it in the brief but informative tour ... worth an hour or so, and free to visit ... I think, either that or I wandered in without paying.

That's the City Hall station. They tried to turn it into a museum but the plans were stopped by the Giuliani administration because of security concerns.

Nice photos of this station. Looks like it was worth the visit.

It was, definitely, for the photos and to see it, I find things like this interesting anyway ...

(Not a massively cynical bump, I broke my laptop screen in a fall last week so I haven't been able to reply since then ... all better now.)
