I just received my new 7D which upgraded from xsi and so far I love it. I m going to shoot my first basketball game today and had a question about the custom settings. I have turned on the expanded iso speed and am now trying to decide if I should set the noise reduction to high? I am concerned what effect if any the expanded iso and high noise reduction will have on the picture quality when I am shooting at lower iso and the effect of fps. What is the general thought on those that have actually used these settings?
The expanded ISOs are not true ISO settings, the camera shoots at the nearest true ISO and then corrects it in software. Having them turned on will have no effect when using the normal ISOs, all turning the option does is allow you to select them should you wish. Personally, I avoid the high expansion altogether and the low expansion only rarely, when I need a slow shutter speed for motion blur and have already stopped down as far as I can go.
At the high end, I would prefer to shoot at the highest "true" ISO and correct the underexposure myself in Lightroom, rather than let the camera do it. Same goes with noise reduction, I wouldn't let the camera do it, I prefer the control that comes with doing it myself. Having said that, I shoot raw, so it shouldn't be applied anyway (apart from as a tag that DPP would read as a starting point - it wouldn't be baked in)
