1Ds2 to 1Ds3

Other than the small increase in resolution and much better screen, is the jump worth the 1500 (sorry, no pound sign on my phone) after trading in my 2?

Will I notice a difference in af, colour, dynamic range etc......?

Can't help you much as I have neither although I do shoot with a 5DMkII which I understand is the same sensor as in the 1Ds3 and it's a very nice sensor. As to the rest of the package, don't know.

I think the difference in resolution is rather significant, isn't it? I thought the 1Ds2 was 16mp, and the 1Ds3 21mp - I'd say that 5 million extra pixels, or 30% more pixels - is more than slight. But, admittedly, it would not make a "real world" difference for many photographers (although for some of us the extra pixels would be extremely useful).

Another advantage for the 3 is that we can expect Canon to service the camera for at least 4 or 5 more years. That is a very important factor for me.

The 1DS3 had numerous upgrades over the 1DS2. Obviously the extra megapixels and faster frame rate helps. But the addition of 14 bit RAW files (up from 12 bit), Live View capability, larger 3 inch screen, self cleaning sensor, highlight tone priority are good too. I most like the one handed ability to change camera functions - MUCH easier. The camera also weighs a bit less than the 1DS2 due to a lighter, but more powerful battery. All in all it was a pretty good step-up from the previous model.

Thanks for the replies, one body that I haven't thought of is a new 5D3, the price difference between them isn't huge.

I had the 1ds original and it was a fine camera. I wanted the mark 2 as many say it has the best pictures of any canon camera when used at lowish iso numbers. If you need higher speeds and higher fps the 5d3 or 1ds3 will be an improvement but if you normally shoot sub iso1600 they may not be to much benefit, though the batteries on newer models are a major step up from older ones

I had a 1DS too, the main difference I found between the two was operational speed.

I don't often use high ISO, but it would be nice have the option, plus, as mentioned already, it would be nice to know that Canon will still service the body for a while.

How do you rate the 1ds2. I may buy one this year if I get one at the right price/condition

The output I rate highly, my only gripe with it is that it feels a bit 'old'. Strange thing to say, but I feel I should get with the times more!

The screen isn't the best (better than the 1DS though) the focus has never really let me down, although it can struggle a bit when the light is low.

Although it only goes to ISO 1600 (3200 expanded) I've found 1600 to be perfectly useable...if exposed correctly!

I would recommend one, as long as you know you'll be happy with what you're getting.

I have three 5d2 bodies and a 1ds2. I use both depending on the shoot. I really love the 1ds2. I like big heavy cameras. With that said, the only thing I miss on the 1ds2 is live view. If I didn't have so many 5d2 bodies I would probably upgrade to the 1ds3 just for live view. I have used the 1ds3 and can say its definetly a big upgrade but I haven't felt it was a double the price upgrade yet. Maybe when they get down to the $2000 range I might send the 1ds2 to a new home and upgrade. Or maybe I might just jump straight to a 1D Cinema if I can convince some producers it's a solid choice over the Red cameras we usually use for movies.

What type of shooting will you be using the 1Ds 3 for?

The same as my 1DS2, landscapes.
My other interest is astronomy, I can see that the 5D3 would be good for that.

I do sometimes use it at Silverstone too (not its natural element I know), for cars and bikes, so I need something with fast reliable focusing.

I did a bunch of research and testing on these 2 wonderful cameras when I was looking to replace my 5dc. Used 1ds2 price is really great. I see them going for around $1000.

The 1ds3 is is largest MP 1d-series camera at the moment.
Ergonomics is better too. This is important as 1d-cameras are gigantic. The two button functions really drive me nuts with older 1d cameras (had a 1d2n long time ago).

Interestingly the 1ds3 tops out at ISO3200 just like the 1ds2 and 5dc. Kinda bummer in that sense as the 5d2 has a higher ceiling. 1

Anyhow if you can swing it the 1ds3 is a great camera. The shutter sound is studly.
