ISO wise, although they both the 2 & 3 top out at the same, is the 3 cleaner?

The difference in settings, battery life, and handling features were all pretty significant when the MkIII arrived.

For many, including myself, the wish list of improvements the MkIII offered in useability was significant. For us 1D shooters (not 1Ds) the jump in MP was only 2 megapixels (8 to 10) and yet the IQ improvement, noise handling and color were far larger than those 2MP would have seemed possible, (14 bit RAW files is part of the reason for this.. ) all f which made the upgrade VERY worth it despite the seemingly insignificant 2MP gain.

I think you will be pretty amazed with the actual improvements made to the 1 series going from MkII to MkIII.

Some of this may be germane,

...it's a comparison I did after a year or so of working with the 1D MkIII as compared to the MkII I had shot for three years prior.

And just for FYI, here's the wish list thread where we got to compare the MkIII with what we'd been asking for. Gives an idea of the improvements you will get in the overall experience,( not so much about IQ. )

The same as my 1DS2, landscapes.
My other interest is astronomy, I can see that the 5D3 would be good for that.

I do sometimes use it at Silverstone too (not its natural element I know), for cars and bikes, so I need something with fast reliable focusing.

I say 1Ds 3 all the way. Having used the 5D 3 extensively the sensor edges out at high ISO. If high ISO is important to you, this is the route to go. For landscapes, the 1Ds 3 is the best sensor for shadow recovery. :)

The ISO 3200 is clean when exposing correctly.

Sample at ISO 3200:

....or .......how about this.

I keep my bodies as they are, but add a 300 f4, 100-400 (used to have one, liked it), maybe a TC 1.4 and a 50 1.2.....and a much bigger bag.
