Am seeming to be having an issue with my focusing on my EOS550D. I am shooting in RAW & in AV Mode. Lens used in these pics is a EF-S 10-22mm

Have done a couple of test shots just now of my driveway. To me, they seem very soft pre PP.

Settings are as follows -

First pic -

Shooting mode - AV
ISO - 100
Focal distance - 10mm
Aperture - f11
Shutter Speed - 1/50 sec.
Hand Held

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

After PP in Lightroom 4

HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

Second pic -

Shooting mode - AV
ISO - 100
Focal Distance - 22mm
Aperture - f11
Shutter Speed - 1/40 sec
Hand Held

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

After PP in Lightroom 4

The softness of my RAW pics is "Doing my head in".

All advice greatly received & listened to.

Kind regards, Kevin

at 1/40 sec use a tripod
or
raise your iso to get a higher shutter speed

So if God made Man & Woman....whats his excuse for Nikon...

Remember that shooting in RAW there is NO SHARPENING applied to your photo files meaning you have to sharpen the images yourself in post once they're on your compute. The image may look sharp on your camera's LCD but that only because the camera produced a thumbnail JPEG to show to you...it applied some sharpening to the thumbnail but not the actual RAW file.

The images are sharpened when displayed /opened in Lightroom or Photoshop - the default is 25%.

If the OP hasn't changed the defaults. :) Also, 25% is quite low for some cameras if they have a fairly strong AA filter and in those cases something around 60 could be more appropriate. I use a higher amount (40-60) and lower radius (typically 0.9) for my D700 versus the default of 25 and 1.0.

The setting for output sharpening is also important for LR. Mine is set as "Standard". If the OP uses too low a value for capture sharpening and has output sharpening set to Low then the resulting image will be soft.

Frosticles, f/11 is also about the softest aperture to shoot at with the 10-22mm. Images will be softer in the center at f/11 than wide open for every focal length except 22mm. From the Photozone.de tests the sweet spot for center sharpness for this lens appears to be:

f/5.6 at 10mm
f/5.6 at 14mm
f/8 at 22mm

Also, low shutter-speeds like 1/40 and 1/50s are going to result in a bit of camera shake hand-held. It's not as noticeable with a wide angle, but you'll see it when pixel peeping. If you're trying to test your lens try some shots at the above apertures using a tripod. In LR add a reasonable amount of capture (Develop module) sharpening and set output (Export) sharpening to "Standard".

Many thanks all for your help on this. The 2 shots I did this morning were rushed TBH.
When I process in Lightroom 99% seem to come out ok but still nowhere near as sharp as some of the pics that are posted on this forum which tends to bug me as I want mine like that! :D

Kind regards, Kevin
