I spent yesterday out in the wilds of North Yorkshire watching some odd people hurl expensive cars at trees. What an odd hobby...

Yours truly made the classic mistake of assume shooting spots used in other years would still be there. Thanks to some fairly serious logging activity i was completely wrong and had to make do for the first run of the day...

1. Barry Jordan's colourful MK2 Escort.

[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

2. Peter Stephenson pedalled his Focus WRC to 3rd Overall.

3. Chris Birkbeck's Mazda RX7 gave us a pleasant change from the usual stream of Ford Escorts in the Historic class.

4. Would you believe it?...another MK2 Escort.
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

5. Oliver Mellors in a Proton Satria Neo S2000. IMVHO this is the direction the WRC should have taken rather than 1.6 Turbo Cars..
[IMAGE TOO SMALL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

6. Winners for the 3rd year in a row, Charlie Payne & Craig Thorley in a Ford Focus WRC. This car was a sight worth seeing on the 2nd run through Roppa...i believe "Maximum Attack" is the phrase...

7. A MK1 Escort in Gulf colours. Most acceptable.

8. Alex Lund had entertained us all with a superb display a few weeks earlier at Croft, but he retired after stage 9 this time around..

All the above were shot with the 1DMKIV and 70-200 2.8L IS II.

Thanks for looking!

Nice images #5 is the winner for me, the color on the car just makes it pop out of the picture.

Cheers Simon. It turns out that Payne's car had blown its Head Gasket prior to this stage and they were constantly topping it up with water on the road sections. It didn't seem to slow him down much!

Eyoop Alan, long time no see etc...

The fog was a pain first thing. When it combined with me picking a spot which no longer existed (due to logging) it left us with few options as the first cars were due, so we ended up at a chicane of all places! The second run worked out a bit better fortunately :)

1+2 were taken at a Chicane on the uphill stretch before the finish, about 10-15 minutes walk from where you were. The rest were further back in the direction of the start, between the main spectator point (just up from your spot) and the double chicane with the gates. If you drop me a PM with your e-mail address i'll send you some maps.

Other than the direction, Roppa doesn't change much from year to year. The reason we go there is that College Moor gets absolutely packed and most of the other stages are non-spectator due to PR issues.

Thanks Tobias. Bright yellow does stand out quite nicely in a snow Forest :)

#5 is fantastic Geoff, the yellow of the Proton really stands out and the depth to the trees in the background makes for a superb image.
