I have been so busy with work, this was my first chance to shoot a race. *Conditions were amazing today for the dual GS race! *Looks like we might have 5 days of snow starting Monday night to keep this killer snow going. All photos are unedited jpegs.

Really nice shots. How do you keep the camera warm enough to avoid error messages?

Thank you.. I have never had an issue with my camera ever getting too cold and causing errors. Yesterday at the race it was about 35*. I have shot in temps colder than 20* without any issues. When I ski with my camera, I use the Cotton Carrier (external link) under my jacket. It looks odd but keeps it warm. but as far as it getting cold and failing while shooting, it has never happened to me.

it's crazy how much better the young guys and gals are getting, even since my time racing (which wasn't even that long ago in the scheme of things)
makes me miss it

Great shots! How did you meter the exposure? Did you use the trees in the background, or something else? Or is it just experience?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I shoot in full manual mode. First I look at what the sunlight is doing and how bright it is and get a rough estimate for ISO and Shutter Speed. I always shoot at F4 so I can get pretty close to my settings just by looking at what I'm shooting and how bright the sun is.

I take a test shot and read the histogram. That is the only way to tell true exposure. Once I get that dialed in, I dial in my CPL to remove glare and recheck the histogram. Then throughout the day I will peep at the histo to see if I am in the range I need to be.

That is how I dial in my exposure while shooting in Manual Mode.

Thanks! I need more experience shooting in snow.

No problem. And that technique can be used anywhere. Just make sure you monitor exposure if you shift away from where you got your exposure dialed in.
