I was travelling out to see Death Valley and saw what appeared to be a gunnery range off the hiway. What do you think? There were some stations there as well.

How far out of Las Vegas? Which side of the highway? Creech AFB is at Indian Springs, about 40 miles north of L.V. on Hwy 95, and they manage a gunnery range and do drone testing. Yes, what are "stations"? However, the USAF doesn't operate tanks (except as targets), so it could be part of a joint exercise. Unless, you were traveling north out of Baker, CA towards Death Valley, and then the USMC from Fort Irwin uses some of that territory to the west of the highway. Nevada is crawling with military operations, as it is good simulation for the Middle East terrain.

Doesn't necessarily have to be aerial gunnery. Could be for anti-armor training or even just a place to let rip with some .50cal rounds!

Tanks appear to me M60s

I imagine you were driving N. on 95 and took your shot off to the right side of the road. That's the Nellis AFB training range.

Among other things, it's used for Red Flag exercises. I used to write the intel scenarios, along with detailed descriptions of the targets (be they armored columns, scud units, SAM sites, power plants, or whatever), give the intel briefings to the crews, and give the BDA assessment when they got back. An interesting, but busy job ('93-'96).

Inert weapons were used on most of the targets (or they wouldn't be able to replace them fast enough), but there are also areas used for live weapons (not necessarily tied to Red Flag).

There are numerous towers out there for scoring bomb hits, in order to figure BDA, among other things.

Adjacent, see the map on the previous post. Been there, done that. My IBM career of 32 years was spent on the Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site), from testing a nuclear rocket engine at Jackass Flats for a manned mission to Mars, to "whole lot of shaking going on" with underground tests. Got there just a tad too late to witness an above-ground test, but the wife had that privilege.

By station, I meant towers like these to observe the action

Sure looks like the Creech AFB (Indian Springs) range to me. Dry lake in the farther distance? I can kick myself for not getting a photo of the sign at the "Atomic View Trailer Park" in years past.
