Did I get jipped, or is this normal

Hi all,

Just picked up an 85mm 1.8 with an opteka hood. I find the hood pretty much impossible to get on. Is that an aspect of the (incredibly) stupid way the 85mm's hood is attached, an aspect of the crappiness of the offbrand hood, or did I just get a dud hood.

The hood should go on very easily, at least my original Canon one does. The novel attachment method makes it more likely to get knocked OFF, but also easier to fit than some bayonet ones, particularly as they get older (my 100-400L hood is really stiff to get on or off now that it is several years old).

My experience of Opteka is that they supply budget priced products, which often show that you get what you pay for. My guess is that it is down to the crappiness of the hood.

I kind of figured, but I wanted to make sure. I don't want to buy the canon one if it is prone to the same issue.

This wass from craigslist. The hood was not going to make or break the deal, it just kind of came with the lens.

I have the Canon hood and to me it feels awkward. Missing the positive feel of the bayonet, be it while mounting as well as in use.

3rd party ET-65 hoods are hit and miss. There is very little quality control and some will fit better than others. Your best bet is a Canon ET-65 hood but you could try another 3rd party ET-65 and see if it fits better.

Like I said...I wasn't buying the hood. I was buying the lens. A $4 accessory wasn't going to make or break the deal. My question was whether the hood itself (offbrand) was the issue or whether it was the specific hood that I got. Your comment adds abesolutely nothing to the conversation.

Like others above my Canon hood works just fine. Like agedbriar I do like the bayonet-type mount better, but this hood works fine.

I don't have my f/1.8 anymore but both the Canon ET-65 and the Foto-Diox knockoff I had fit very well. Check the plastic thread at the front of your lens where the hood mounts and see if it's damaged or worn. That could be why the hood doesn't fit on. Hopefully though, it's the hood itself. I can recommend both the Canon version and the FotoDiox versions. Canon is the only one I've purchased so far that has the fabric flocking on the inside. I've pretty much decided to stick with Canon hoods from now on.

i had the same issue with a 3rd party hood (don't recall which brand it was) for the 85 f/1.8, ended up buying the Canon hood of which I have had no issues with.

I have a off brand hood on my own and like it I loaned the lens / hood to a friend and he wishes all his hoods were like it easy to put on .

I had a cheap ebay hood when I had a 85 1.8 - it would fall off all the time when bumped... fun stuff... definitely don't miss THAT feature

You need to look up the term 'jipped' (correctly spelled gypped) before you go posting it in a public forum...
