I had an off brand.. Can't remember the name but every time you bumped it, it fell off. I bought this one:
http://www.amazon.com …o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (external link)

$4.95 and it is stellar. Absolutely no issues. It locks on securely and stays in place.

Yeah go figure. Like someone said it is probably hit and miss. Lack of quality control by Opteka.

Good luck with the Canon one:)

Edit- And its not like I can change the title anyway. In hindsight I would have made it something more relevant, such as: "3rd party lens hood on 85mm F1.8". But to be fair, I didn't think I would be interwebz-assaulted for using a word incorrectly. Should have known better but like I said, I've had nothing but positive experiences on this forum until now.

I think you can edit the title when you edit the first post of the thread.

Nope, tried that. As far as I know the title is uneditable.

On a "related" subject: What is amazing is that some people are attacking you without even knowing if English is your mother tongue or the second language!

Agreed... come on folks, we don't need that here.

Well - attacking people on the net is the new national sport.

Same with attacking companies someone somewhere have heard a rumor that they just might have done something incorrect for someone else somewhere on the other side of the world.

Wouldn't life be boring if people aren't allowed to sit at home and snipe at whoever happens to cross their paths?

I have a Canon hood for my 85 1.8. It is an annoying piece of crap, too. Just like the aftermarket one.

One of my off brand hoods was gettin tough to install & remove.
I just took a clean sponge(magic eraser) and wiped both sides, hood and lens, down & its all better now.

Sometimes all it takes is cleaning

Boring isn't necessarily the word I would pick for it, but it would definitely be something. ;)

That's what I am worried about. I am going to just send it back if it doesnt work. Maybe I will try a thorough cleaning as well as per the above suggestion.

It's a slur, even if you don't think it is. Would you start a thread saying "Someone jewed me out of money?" Just because some people don't know the definition doesn't mean it's not hateful slang that could be hurtful to some. I'm not hating, trying to teach. It's good to know these things when conversing in public.

I'm glad I hate political correctness, pretty dumb stuff. Glad I didn't get jewed out of my common sense.

I agree that political correctness is choking lots of aspects of our society. But so is downright ignorance and arrogance. Most people put the best manners forward when dealing with strangers and acquaintances. It hurts nothing to hold others to a bit of civility. Like your mom said, "Be nice!" Right before she popped you in the back of the head!

I had an off brand hood for my 85 1.8 -- it didn't fit snugly and was easily knocked off the lens. I finally bought a Canon hood from B&H and it fits better and hasn't been disloged accidently in the year I've owned it.
