Best bang for my bucks - upgrading from 18-55 kit lens

What should I be looking at in the used lens market for upgrading my 18-55 kit lens? My budget is about $500 or less (or less would be real nice). I'd use this as an all-around lens. Being able to shoot indoors without a flash would be a real plus, so I'm wondering if one of the 2.8's is within my grasp. I'm open to manufactures other than Canon as well.

Thanks in advance for your expert opinions.

If you're wanting a 2.8 lens, I'd look into the Tamron 17-50 non-VC. If IS is a must, then try the VC version. If you don't care about the 2.8 and want a little more range, checkout the Canon 15-85. You can get them on the forum for around $500.

Great IQ in that 15-85, if you can deal with the fact it's not too fast...

The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC (Tamron's version of IS) version runs about $500 new, or $300 used here. If you go used, you can get the VC version for around $400, or the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 with OS for about $500. These get reasonably good reviews here.

You should also at least entertain the idea of going with a prime. Seems like there are good deals on the soon-to-be updated Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

Tamron and Sigma have good f2.8 zooms in your price range, especially if you buy used. I've had a Tamron 28-75 for several years; it's a very nice lens. However, a dedicated flash would improve your indoor shots tremendously if you learn how to bounce it. Even the fastest lens isn't going to be enough to get good shots in poor light. Shooting indoors, I almost always pair my flash with the Tamron - the results are much better.

Yes, I have a Sigma speedlight and have gotten some pretty good results bouncing it off the ceiling etc., and as you suggest I will keep using the speedlight when it's convenient to do so. I'm thinking of times when it just wouldn't be appropriate to use a flash.

Canon 15-85 would get my vote. Granted its not a constant aperture, its IQ and IS is amazing. Its every bit as good as some of the L lenses and for a walkaround on a crop body, it offers great range.

I recently went through same process of selecting a "normal" range zoom for my 60D and opted for the Canon 15-85 IS and am very pleased with this lens. You can find one used for around $500 on the forums. I had considered the Tamron and SIgma versions, but opted for the better IQ and durability the Canon supposedly has.

The 18-55 IS-II, 55-250 IS, and a Canon 50 1.8, so I'm really just getting started as far as "nice" lenses. And I've got a pair of xsi bodies, one of which is getting upgraded to a t3i in the near future.

I had the Tamron 17-50 non VC and it served me well for almost 6 years. Very sharp but the AF did hunt in really low light but I learned to adjust for it. Last year I upgraded it to the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS abd have been very happy with it! It is sharp and the AF is more accurate. Either lens will serve you well!

Happy Shopping!

you could add a sigma 30mm f1.4 that may work a bit better indoors no flash, than your 50mm, or a 17-50f2.8, and it's recent drop in price makes it a great deal

if you're looking for the best budget bang for the buck against the 18-55mm, it should be either the tamron 17-50f2.8, or maybe even the older sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 OS...both used should be around the $300 mark

Here's another option. It is at your maximum budget though.
