I'm still using my Canon XTi, but i'm finding now that I need something better for handling noise. With this camera as far as I push it is 800 iso.

Would it be possible to get some suggestions for a camera that will handle higher iso better? Maybe starting from lowest on up. In the winter months here I pretty much have to shoot inside.

Thank you.

Any of the Canon 18MP Digital Rebel cameras, such as the T2i, would be good direct replacements for the XTi, with similar controls. You'd need to switch from CompactFlash memory cards to Secure Digital cards, but SD cards are very reasonably priced. Also, you'd need new batteries, but third-party batteries are affordable and effective.

If you're upset by high ISO noise and want to spend less than a new camera would cost, you need to get noise reduction software (external link) and use it.

Others may suggest larger or heavier or more expensive cameras, but they will not help you buy the equipment or tell you how to raise the money to purchase it.

YOU NEED A 1DX!!!!!!!1111

Actually he is right on point, any of the T2i and newer rebels would be a good option and not break the bank. Software is another option, however software noise reduction has a tendency to also reduce natural texture, leaving surfaces somewhat plastic looking if you have to use a heavy noise reduction. If you want to step up in both performance and controls, the 60D is another option and is a very good camera.

What do you shoot? What lenses do you have? What is your budget?

At the moment Id suggest a newer rebel, but there are also some second hand options that could be more suitable depending on the answer to those 3 questions.

They got the camera part covered, but there are ways in software where you can use noise reduction without that plastic look. Apply NR to only the areas that really need it. Large monochromatic areas tend to show noise much more than complex textured areas so, apply the NR to those and apply less to the textured areas. THis of course requires post processing and not in camera NR.

I do own and run noise reduction software, actually it's from topazlabs. Very happy with it. I just feel since i've owned my camera since 07, there is better to be had now so decided it's time for an upgrade. Noise however would be my biggest issue I deal with in low light photography so that is something I know off the bat I want to look at in my next camera.

I shoot pretty much anything and everything, it's a hobby. But the main issue is low light conditions that I would like to have a camera that will have a higher iso setting then my XTi does. 1600 is the highest setting on the XTi, and you pretty much want too stay clear of that in low light so 800 is tops so getting a newer camera that will give me higher iso's would definately help alongside my noise reduction software. I also love photographing my companions when I have them out and about hiking or walks, a Golden Retriever and a Black Lab.

As for lenses I already own, 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, EF85mm f/1.8 USM, EF50 f/1.8 as well as the standard kit lens that came with my XTi. I also own the 400 EX II speedlight. For vids is needed, which is rarely, i'd use the G11 I also own.

My price range would probally be up too 1,500 or less. I hope the more information helps I've supplied you with.

with that budget and FF capable lenses, you might as well look in that direction... 5D2/6D would be a HUMONGOUS step in low light. ISO 800 on an xti is like ISO 3200/6400 on a 5D2...

With EF lenses, I'd look at a clean second hand 5D2 for about $1300. Unless you find yourself at 300 on your 70-300 a lot?

I would get a 5D II, but that's just me. They are going for real cheap these days.
