I would like to get a teleconverter to hold me over before my next lens purchsase. From the FAQ it seems that Tamron and Kenko models will work with almost any lens.

Have any of you used a tcon with the Canon 28-135 IS ? and have you been happy with the results?

Thanks,
Rich

I have the ef 28-135 IS, but I've never used it with any TC. I have a Canon 1.4x TC, but it won't fit that lens. I understand that the Kenko TC should fit just about any lens, but would AF still work?

No AF with any TC that reports the effective aperture back to the camera, the Canon and Sigma TCs won't physically fit and the optics on the 28-135mm aren't great in the first place so after you stick a T-Con on there it will be horrid. Don't bother.

I was hoping to find somebody with actual expierince with this, not to hear that I have a crappy lens. I am quite happy with my lens and I am aware that a tcon will reduce quality. I know that this is not an ideal solution, but I was hoping to get by cheap untill I can pick up a 70-300 IS.

Why do you say this about the optics on the lens? I have the 28-135 IS(mucho heavy) and also the 70-300 IS. Is there something I am not seeing about the quality of the lenses? I also have the "el cheapo" 28-200mm and the 70-300 and I seem do be doing OK with the quality of the prints and on the internet discussions. My favorite is the light 28-200 without IS.

There's two routes you can go here now;

1> Take the advice and save your $$ for a longer lens.

2> Go ahead and invest in a T-con that still may prove usefull in the future with an actual telephoto lens. If you go this route,. I don't think the T-con is a waste,. as you may find use for it with some future lens,. and may enjoy toying with it on your 28-135mm...

... but I do not think you will be happy with the results combined with the 28-135mm.

Even though the Tamron and Kenko T-cons may physically "fit" the 28-135mm,. they are still T-cons and still designed to work optimally with telephoto lenses. A wide to tele zoom with a t-con is a marginal solution at best.

When discussing T-cons,. the image quality of the lens it will be paired with is ALLWAYS pertinant to the discussion.. so no need to try and exclude others opions of the optics.. even if there's does not agree with yours. The lens optics is even more pertinant in instances where the optics of the lens are such that the degradation that will will occur is exponentially greater..

...this is such a case,. the mating of a T-con to this type of zoom is so far removed from what is intended, the degradation is far worse than with say a 100mm prime that simply won't fit a Canon T-con.

I say that beause it's my opinion of the quality of the optics of the 28-135mm - you'll note from my signature that I have one as well.

a kenko converter will cost you at least $150 delivered. you'd be better off buying a cheap zoom lens with the money.

you can get, say, a canon 70--210 f4 off of ebay usually under $100. plus this lens has a super good macro.
