I have a canon 17-55 2.8 is, but I got a bug of buying a new lens. (Don't know what the hell I want) so I started considering this sigma lens. I have the 70-200 f4 so the sigma will still cover canons 17-55 range and fill the gap to the big boy one.

Will this be a good move or will I regret it? I read the entire digital picture review and said they weren't happy with iq but I see mis matching responses.

Buy it from a reputable dealer and return it if you find you don't like it. Personally, I love mine.

The IQ (sharpness and CA) is not on par with the 17-55 f2.8. A 24-70 f2.8 would fill the gap better if you are wanting something with the same IQ characteristics. But the question is "what is 'good enough'?"

You can find a lot more sample work to give you an idea of what this lens might be capable of.

Then take this into consideration. The current version of this lens has 1 SLD and 2 FLD elements. The old version linked above only has ELD glass. So the sharpness and CA should both be improved. Plus you get USB dock compatibility and you can focus super close due to the macro capabilities. (1:2.9 magnification)

So it is certainly sharp enough in my book for most general work. I try to avoid shooting wide-open but the sharpness there is still acceptable for most situations.

Overall it is a fantastic all-around lens. An excellent choice for someone wanting dramatic improvement over the kit lens. It has some features that I think put it ahead of the Canon 15-85 and it is a completely higher class lens than the 17-85.

So I'm a big fan of this lens, BUT if you are looking for something to fill that gap from 55mm up to 70mm, and you spend a lot of time shooting at f4 or wider, and you don't need the range of 17-70 or the macro capability, you will probably be better served with the 24-70 f2.8. `

Just picked one up...nothing special just a few test shots to test sharpness and macro capabilities, straight out of the camera. For this first one, the lens glass was only about a centimeter away from the subject.

Thinking hard about this lens...the dock won't do me much good though since I don't have windows 7 or 8 lol I'm on an ancient XP.

So far I'm liking it. It is on the small side and I have big hands, so I have to adapt to that...I have to make sure my finger isn't on the grip on the focus ring when it is autofocusing or else it may mess up the motor.

Although small, it feels like a solid build.

Well, I just traded this lens in for a Tamron SP 17-50 f2.8 VC for a couple reasons:

I like the Tamron's build better...it's bigger and fits my hands better, my finger isn't getting in the way of the focus ring when it autofocuses

Secondly, I like the constant aperture of the Tamron
