Today, I decided to challenge myself by photographing my Scolopendra alternans. The centipede is 7 inches long from tip to tip (5" body length), and very very fast! The longest it ever sat still in the 2 hours I photographed it was for 5 seconds. :-x Not to mention, it is a very shiny animal...making using a flash very challenging. I ended up keeping fewer than 6% of my shots in the end. I shot these at F/20 !!!

So, here are some of the pics I kept! I'd like to know which one is your favorite.

And in case you were wondering how I managed to keep track of the centipede while taking pics, I made a "Centipede Moat".

Yeah, 7 inches (18cm) from tip of antenna to tip of cerci. Body length is only 5 inches though. And yes, it can bite, but I haven't been bitten yet. (crosses fingers)

BTW, its still has a lot of growing to do! :D

Oh my, they do get longer and they have a terrible bite as I understand it. I watched one of the common household variety nab a silverfish once, it took it and bit it and in a few seconds the entire silver fish was a drop of liquid that the centipede sucked down.

They are venomous, but nowhere near deadly. Now, the bite is apparently very painful. :D
