I'm just asking because I'm thinking i should get one for family events where i don't wanna carry heavy dslr's+flashes... basically for personal use.

I'm a noob when it comes to point and shoots.. have no idea whats good and whats not.. can someone tell me what are the things to look for in a good point and shoot camera?.. and what are the current best point and shoots around?

I've got a lumix GF3 four thirds camera for such things. Good enough quality and fairly discreet.

I don't, my 5D2 does everything I need. I don't carry my full lens compliment everywhere or my flash, just select what I think I will require.

I grab my wife's point and shoot if I want a camera but don't want to take an SLR, however, if I was investing in a "point and shoot" myself to cut down on size then I would probably go to micro 4/3rds as suggested above... not really a point shoot but it's what I'd do!

I have a Canon S95 for times when carrying my SLRs isn't practical. However, lots of people are using the cameras in their phones as alternatives to a P&S. I got seriously flamed here about a year ago for even suggesting that the camera in the iPhone was good enough to replace a P&S, but it turns out I was right given (1) the market for P&S cameras has been declining, and (2) the great shots you can see all over the Internet taken with phone cameras. For me, I think the S95 will be my last P&S because my iPhone takes very good pictures.

For the OP, as a photo enthusiast with some good SLRS gear, I would suggest you get something with RAW capability, such as a Canon G15 or S100/110.

I used to have a point and shoot and carry with us on occasions but found most of the time we would just pull out the iphone and take what ever we wanted to. Point and shoot is in the closet collecting dust. If I know its going to be a good place for taking photos then I bring my dslr and lens for what I am going to want to shoot. Most of the time I know that what we take is only going on Facebook or just to show on my iphone anyway for those occasions.

Photos from the iPhone 4S and 5 are really quite good  I've got a 4, which isn't that great, but it still works a treat when I've got no other camera on me!

My wife has a Samsung EX1 that I use every now and then.
Image quality is very good however and I guess its successor EX2 F is even better.
It's biggest drawback is that it is slow compared to a DSLR but it kinda goes with the territory.

My father has a Canon G1X.
Crappy optical viewfinder, you end up using the screen all the time.
It is also somewhat clumsy to operate. To small and too big, sort of...
Great IQ though, especially if you shoot raw.
I also much like the exposure compensation wheel.

My own "point and shoot" is a 550D with kit lens :-)

I don't have an iphone. I have a Droid which takes decent enough pictures. But I have been known to pop the point and shoot into my shirt pocket when we go to the beach or to the market while on vacation It's more practical than a big clunky DSLR sometimes.

You should look into Canon G11, G12, etc. I have seen some really good results from them.

+1

I have a Canon G12 and it's a very nice camera. It doesn't have a very large zoom range but I got it mainly for close-ups and family gatherings and it works very well for what I use it for.

I've got a Sony RX100, which is probably as close to DSLR quality as you'll get in a "point and shoot" form factor as of right now. I find that I don't use it as much as I thought I would, as the quality is still nowhere near what I'm used to on the 5D3. When I want to travel light, I usually slap the 50L and a 270ex on my 5D3, sling it on my shoulder (I've got a Joby strap), and head out. It's a very unobtrusive set-up, IMO. I think the key is how you handle yourself when you're out with a DSLR. If you're awkward about it, you will look awkward. If you're casual about it, then its no big deal.

I agree with everyone else that a good camera phone will fill in the gaps nicely for moments when you can't bring your DSLR....if only because it's something you'll have on you all the time (unlike a P&S)

I used to have a point and shoot, but since I've been using smartphones, It kinda dosen't make sense to carry a point and shoot, at least for me anyway. If I wanna go small, I still have a rebel body and the kit lens for those purposes.
